Abstract

The National Information on Software and Services (NISS) is a centrally funded initiative for the provision of information services to the UK academic community via the JANET X.25 and IP (JIPS) network utilizing both Wide Area Networking protocols. The key NISS services include: the NISS Gateway; the NISS Bulletin Board; the NISS Public Access Collections (NISSPAC); NISSWAIS; NISS-EP; and NISS-ALEX. The NISS-ALEX service makes it possible for any user to access data on the Internet without having to connect manually to the remote site and gather the information
