Describes the current and future uses of SGML and Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language (HyTime) within UK universities. Academics' reasons for adopting these standards are to solve problems which are identical to those also face by workers outside the academic community. Research initiative and experiences of academics can provide other potential users with valuable lessons
