Abstract

State of the art review of smart information systems, defined as computerized information systems which are intelligent in the broadest sense of performing functions which are more those of a helper than of a tool, or which appear to make decisions on their own initiative. Describes 3 main approaches and philosophies to designing smart information systems: taking knowledge and what experts say at face value; finding out what experts really do and then trying to imitate them; and ignoring both of these courses and trying to find a way of achieving the same results, or usefully similar results, by whatever method seems to work best. Describes the history of the search for smart systems, focusing on research into knowledge based systems, and presents a thematic review of the field covering; information searching and retrieval systems; automatic indexing; and automatic thesaurus construction. Concludes with a discussion of data input methods; natural language input; voice input; and automated reading of handwriting
