Abstract

Explains the role and value of descriptors in information retrieval. Discusses methods of generating descriptors from the text, how they correlate to classification schemes, and their use as linking devices in providing cues to individual users of information retrieval systems. Notes a number of controlling devices which can be used to fine-tune the role of descriptors in information retrieval
