Outlines the importance of providing a means of identifying documents by subject. Looks at the organization of internally originated documents and the integration of internally and externally source documents in a retrieval enabling system. Discusses: pre-production control, in-production control, post-production control and archiving. Describes production of document substitutes in order to enable retrieval, including abstracts and keywords, and the source and control of keywords
