Abstract

The main objective of the European Working Group on retrospective cataloguing is to plan a European programme for cooperation between major European libraries with scholarly and national collections for the inter-availability of automated databases on equal terms at minimum cost under not for profit arrangement. The working group addressed 2 historical periods: the hand press era (before 1830); and the machine press era (1830-1950); and identifies different priorities within each group of materials. General issues were approaches under 4 main headings: cataloguing considerations; technical considerations; practical considerations; and external considerations. Discusses these in some detail and makes recommendations
