Abstract

An automation pilot project was set up in the manuscripts department of the British Library in 1986. 18 months later, 20 manuscripts cataloguers had individual or shared access to an IBM-compatible personal computer with a Deskjet printer attached. All workstations are linked by a local area network running on Ethernet to facilitate transfer of data.
