Abstract

Technology is viewed as the way to maximize the benefits of intellectual activities undertaken and to reduce the potential for duplication of effort. Network participation ensures the training and wider availability of local expertise. Describes a study to develop a specification for an expert system that models the process of subject cataloguing and investigates the following: the knowledge called on in order to assign subject headings and classification numbers; whether this knowledge can be extracted and documented formally so as to be available and understandable to the developer of an expert system; and whether this formal specification is understandable to the expert so that it may be verified. The insight into the intellectual process involved in the activity may aid the human expert in undertaking the task more effectively
