Abstract

Paper, earlier versions of which were presented at the International Conference on Hypermedia and Interactivity in Museums, Pittsburgh, Oct 91, and published in Archives & Museum Informatica (6) Spring 92 and in the ACA Bulletin 16(6) Jul 92 and 17(3) Jan 93. Archivists are faced with the ongoing challenge of providing access to ever growing amounts of information of which they are only able to display a very small proportion while the bulk remains in storage. Describes how the Toronto Harbour Commission explored the use of optical disc technology to improve access to its holdings of historical photographs the use of which has escalated in recent years. Discusses decisions about the use of digital and analog systems, describes project implementation and development, and considers the advantages and drawbacks of optical disc technology as experienced by the commission
