Abstract

The need to allow access to information other than text has created a market for multimedia repositories - online systems capable of storing and retrieving text, graphics, audio, video and programs. Although the industry is young, some of the technical and architectural direction appears as well defined. In general, such repositories follow a client-server model, make broad use of industry standards, and attempt to enable widespread decentralization of collections of data. The result is a new online system that gives users online access from their desktops to a variety of information on the same device
