Abstract

Based on free multi-user, online, object-oriented (MOO) virtual libraries, low-cost virtual libraries are a reality on the Internet. These virtual libraries use textual descriptions rather than expensive equipment to provide inexpensive access to electronic resources. One such library MOO, the Infocenter, is available to anyone with telnet access and features gopher resources, online automated assistance, and a collaborative text editor. Details the background and history of the Infocenter, provides a short programming tutorial, and demonstrates the easy development of Infocenter materials. Key advantages to the MOO environment are outlined including real-time interaction between users and librarians, 24 hours access, and low-cost development. Discusses disadvantages with consideration to potential enhancements. Information is provided for retrieving MOO software and documentation via anonymous ftp. Basic commands for entering and using the Infocenter are reviewed. Using one interface and a common working environemnt, MOO libraries are a new and viable method of providing library services to many online simultaneous users
