Abstract

As the Internet expands there arises the potential danger that it will be used for illegal purposes, such as the distribution of pornography and stolen commercial or military records. The most obvious method of preventing this threat, which is to allow the police and other law enforcers to intercept Internet traffic, raises the spectre of Internet traffic being intercepted by unofficial bodies. The possibility exists of a single computer being able to listen in to the flow of messages and amass databases of information that reveals individuals' lifestyles or companies' business patterns. Describes techniques that exploit the Internet's modes of action and use (user groups, discussion groups, bulletin boards) to gather information, and other gaps in the security systems of the Internet. Describes ways of increasing the security of Internet messages using anonymous remailers (to conceal the identity of the user), and other methods of encryption of messages within other messages
