Abstract

Examines the growth of CD-ROM, over the period 1980 to 1994, against the backdrop of the trends in online information retrieval and, recently, the emergence of the Internet. Approximate data for indicating trends was obtained by searching the Library Literature database for the terms: CD-ROM; Online; and Internet and recording the number of references for the years 1984 to 1993. Discusses the emergence of multimedia CD-ROM and the effect of the increase in locally mounted databases on the comeback of online. Concludes that the overriding trend has been toward coexistence, with libraries learning the strenghts and weaknesses of each technology
