Abstract

Growing backlogs of material waiting to be catalogued have increased the demand for effective use of online cataloguing databases. The study, conducted at the Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Utah, suggests a pattern of availability of computerized bibliographic records for Spanish and Protuguese materials on the online cataloguing databases: RLIN and OCLC; which can bes used systematically by the cataloguer in order to move or eliminate strategically a large cataloguing backlog. An analysis of online search hit rates suggested that items not catalogued for 15 months after receipt, will not likely receive cataloguing. After that period of time, the availability of records online does not increase and monographs should receive original cataloguing, instead of being set aside agian until further copy appears online
