    Die letzten beiden Teile des Kongressbandes behandeln die Möglichkeiten der Bibliometrie zum Handling des sich explosionsartig vermehrenden Wissens sowie der Einsatz solcher Technologien als Trenderkennungssystem. Zuletzt behandelt ein Artikel die Evaluation der Helmholtz-Einrichtungen. Am Schluss befindet sich noch ein sechsseitiges Register, das sehr hilfreich und für einen Kongressband keineswegs selbstverständlich ist. Vielleicht sollte noch auf den als Einleitung abgedruckten, überaus lesenswerten Festvortrag von Ernst Pöppel, Professor für medizinische Psychologie aus München, hingewiesen werden, der die verschiedenen Formen des Wissens allgemeinverständlich aus Sicht der Hirnforschung darstellt. Hervorzuheben ist noch, dass die Publikation kostenlos über den Publikationsserver des FZ Jülich bezogen werden kann, eine Tatsache, die sich offensichtlich nicht herumgesprochen hat, da bei einer Suche über den Karlsruher Virtuellen Katalog (Stand: 22. April 2008) dieses »Exemplar« nicht gefunden wurde. Als höchstes der Gefühle bietet der Südwestverbund bei »elektronische Referenz« einen Link auf das Inhaltsverzeichnis. Vielleicht erbarmt sich pro Verbund jemand und nimmt die elektronische Version auf."

    Abstract
    In einer früheren Studie wurde bereits der 'informationelle Mehrwert' von bibliographischen Datenbanken durch bibliometrische Nutzung untersucht. Im folgenden soll nun eine visuelle Oberfläche vorgestellt werden, die mit Hilfe einer bibliometrischen 'Sekundärdatenbank' einerseits die Nutzungsmöglichkeiten der zugrundeliegenden bibliographischen Datenbanken vor allem in den Bereichen Wissenschaftsinformation, Forschungsevaluation und Wissenschaftspolitik erweitern soll, andererseits aber auch eine Rückkopplung zu den Aufgaben des traditionellen Retrievals erlaubt. Die visuelle Oberfläche 'Visual Bibliometrics' ist eine Erweiterung des CD-Edition des 'Science Citation Index' und des 'Social Science Citation Index'

    "Struktur der Bibliometrie: Bibliometrie hat drei große Zielgruppen, die direkt oder indirekt das Profil der gegenwärtigen bibliometrischen Forschung mitbestimmen. 1. Bibliometrie für Bibliometriker (Methodik) Das ist die Domäne der bibliometrischen "Grundlagenforschung". Die methodische Forschung erfolgt zumeist in diesem Bereich. 2. Bibliometrie für Wissenschaftsgebiete (Wissenschaftsinformation) Dieser Bereich wird durch eine große aber sehr heterogene Interessengruppe repräsentiert. Infolge der primären Orientierung der Fachwissenschaftler sind deren Interessen stark auf ihr eigenes Gebiet ausgerichtet. Dieser Bereich läßt sich vielleicht am ehesten als Erweiterung der Wissenschaftsinformation mit metrischen Mitteln beschreiben. Hier finden wir auch das Grenzgebiet zu quantitativen Aspekten des Information Retrievals. 3. Bibliometrie für Wissenschaftspolitik (Wissenschaftspolitik) Dieser Bereich ist gegenwärtig der wichtigste in der Bibliometrie. Hier stehen nationale, regionale und institutionelle Strukturen in der Wissenschaft und die vergleichende Untersuchung und die Evaluation der Forschungsleistung auf diesen Aggregationsebenen im Vordergrund."
