    Abstract
    For several decades Rafael Capurro has been at the forefront of defining the relationship between information and modernity through both phenomenological and ethical formulations. In exploring both of these themes Capurro has re-vivified the transcultural and intercultural expressions of how we bring an understanding of information to bear on scientific knowledge production and intermediation. Capurro has long stressed the need to look deeply into how we contextualize the information problems that scientific society creates for us and to re-incorporate a pragmatic dimension into our response that provides a balance to the cognitive turn in information science. With contributions from 35 scholars from 15 countries, Information Cultures in the Digital Age focuses on the culture and philosophy of information, information ethics, the relationship of information to message, the historic and semiotic understanding of information, the relationship of information to power and the future of information education. This Festschrift seeks to celebrate Rafael Capurro's important contribution to a global dialogue on how information conceptualization, use and technology impact human culture and the ethical questions that arise from this dynamic relationship.

    Abstract
    New Directions in Human Information Behavior, co-edited by Drs. Amanda Spink and Charles Cole provides an understanding of the new directions, leading edge theories and models in human information behavior. Information behavior is conceptualized as complex human information related processes that are embedded within an individual's everyday social and life processes. The book presents chapters by an interdisciplinary range of scholars who show new directions that often challenge the established views and paradigms of information behavior studies. Beginning with an evolutionary framework, the book examines information behaviors over various epochs of human existence from the Palaeolithic Era and within pre-literate societies, to contemporary behaviors by 21st century humans. Drawing upon social and psychological science theories the book presents a more integrated and holistic approach to the understanding of information behaviors that include multitasking and non-linear longitudinal processes, individuals' information ground, information practices and information sharing, digital behaviors and human information organizing behaviors. Gemeinsam haben Spink und Cole zuletzt, ebenfalls bei Springer, eine weitere Aufsatzsammlung - New Directions in Cognitive Information Retrieval (2005) - herausgegeben. Das Buch versammelt zwölf Beiträge ("Kapitel"), die in fünf Sektionen dargeboten werden, wobei es sich allerdings bei den Sektionen 1 und 5 (= Kapitel 1 und 12) um Einleitung und Zusammenschau der Herausgeber handelt. Während erstere eigentlich nur eine Übersicht über die Gliederung und die Beiträge des Buches, die jeweils mit Abstracts beschrieben werden, darstellt, kann letztere als eigenständiger Beitrag gelten, der versucht, die in diesem Band angesprochenen Aspekte in einem vorläufigen HIB-Modell zu integrieren.
    ... New Directions in Human Information Behavior ist ein Sammelband, der eindrucksvoll dokumentiert, dass sich die Forschung zu den Themen Informationssuche bzw. Informationsverhalten - ein in unserem Sprachraum freilich wenig bekannter und weitgehend unrezipierter Teilbereich der Informationswissenschaft - gegenwärtig stark im Umbruch befindet. Der Trend von den bisherigen, eher an Paradigmen wie Dokument, fachliche Informationssuche, Bibliothek, wissenschaftliche Informationsnutzung orientierten Ansätzen hin zur Betrachtung alltäglicher Situationen und weiterer Bevölkerungsschichten sowie die Einbeziehung von neuen bzw. aus anderen sozialwissenschaftlichen Bereichen stammenden theoretischen Überlegungen ist nicht zu übersehen. Mitunter mutet dies wie eine (Wieder- bzw. Neu-)Entdeckung der Kommunikationswissenschaft durch die Informationswissenschaft an - oder auch umgekehrt, zumal einige der im vorliegenden Band Schreibenden aus communication departments kommen. Wie auch immer, wer sich für den gegenwärtigen Stand der Entwicklung auf dem HIB-Sektor interessiert, kommt um dieses Buch nicht herum. Allerdings taucht darin der Begriff framework - erfahrungsgemäss oft mit weniger handfesten Inhalten korreliert und mir daher stets ein wenig suspekt - für meinen Geschmack etwas zu häufig auf. HIB ist leider nicht das einzige Akronym, das hier eingeführt wird. Bisher ging es im gegenständlichen Kontext ja bloss um IS (information seeking) - ein neben IR (information retrieval) auch schon bekanntes und eingeführtes Kurzwort.
    Angesichts des skizzierten Umbruchs kann HIB wohl akzeptiert werden, doch ist es - wie dieses Buch zu suggerieren trachtet - wirklich notwendig, daneben auch noch IBEC (information behaviour in everyday contexts), ELIS (everyday life information seeking), HIOB (human information organizing behaviour), CIB (collaborative information behaviour), CIS&R (collaborative information seeking & retrieval) und HICB (human information co-ordinating behaviour) zu verwenden? Wohl kaum, doch wer wird bzw. kann ein solches Spamming verhindern? Würde der akademische Ernst nicht jede Schadenfreude verbieten, so könnte man konstatieren, dass diese Akronymenflut zu unnötigen Druckfehlern führt (z.B. p.172, wo sogar in einer Zwischenüberschrift "HIBO" statt "HIOB" zu lesen ist). In herausgeberischer Hinsicht ist weiter zu bemängeln, dass die meist ansehnlichen und sich naheliegenderweise zum Teil überschneidenden Literaturverzeichnisse der einzelnen Beiträge besser in einer Gesamtbibliographie mit konsistentem Zitierstil zu vereinen gewesen wären, zumal sie in der vorliegenden Form auch etwas inkonsistent und nicht fehlerfrei sind. In diese Richtung zu investieren wäre sinnvoller gewesen als in die Erstellung eines geradezu erbärmlichen Sachregisters (dessen Verriss den Rahmen dieser Besprechung sprengen würde), welches auf Herausgeber bzw. Lektorat - falls es letzteres überhaupt noch gibt - ein eher fahles Licht wirft. Abgesehen davon fielen mir nur einige fehlerhafte bzw. unvollständige Angaben der Institutszugehörigkeiten am Beginn der einzelnen Kapitel (z.B. p.113, p.203) sowie die nicht ganz homogen gestalteten Kurzbiographien der Verfasser/innen am Ende des Buches auf. Der Band selbst ist von gewohnt solider Springer-Machart und zielt schon aufgrund seines hohen Preis wohl nur auf institutionelle Käufer ab."

It is clearly a formidable task. Warner succeeds occasionally in this endeavor; more often, he fails. Yet, it would be wrong to mark Humanizing Information Technology as a book not worth reading. On the contrary, though much fault was found and this review is far from positive, it was nevertheless a book well-worth reading. That Humanizing Information Technology succeeds at all is in some ways remarkable, because Warner's prose tends to be dense and graceless, and understanding his commentaries often relies an close readings of a wide array of sources, some of them familiar, many of them less so. The inaccessibility of Warner's prose is unfortunate; there is not a single idea in Humanizing Information Technology so complicated that it could not have been stated in a clear, straightforward manner. The failure to establish a clear, sufficiently füll context for the more obscure sources is an even more serious problem. Perhaps the most conspicuous example of this problem stems from the frequent examination of the concept of the "information society" and the related notion of information as an autonomous variable, each of them ideas drawn largely from Frank Webster's 1995 book, Theories of the Information Society. Several of Warner's essays contain passages in Humanizing Information Technology whose meaning and value are largely dependent an a familiarity with Webster's work. Yet, Warner never refers to Theories of the Information Society in more than cursory terms and never provides a context füll enough to understand the particular points of reference. Suffice it to say, Humanizing Information Technology is not a book for readers who lack patience or a thorough grounding in modern intellectual history. Warner's philosophical analyses, which frequently exhibit the meter, substance, and purpose of a carefully crafted comprehensive examination, are a large part of what is wrong with Humanizing Information Technology. Warner's successes come when he turns his attention away from Marxist scholasticism and toward historical events and trends. "Information Society or Cash Nexus?" the essay in which Warner compares the role of the United States as a "copyright haven" for most of the 19th century to modern China's similar status, is successful because it relies less an abstruse analysis and more an a sharply drawn comparison of the growth of two economies and parallel developments in the treatment of intellectual property. The essay establishes an illuminating context and cites historical precedents in the American experience suggesting that China's official positions toward intellectual property and related international conventions are likely to evolve and grow more mature as its economy expands and becomes more sophisticated. Similarly, the essay entitled "In the Catalogue Ye Go for Men" is effective because Warner comes dangerously close to pragmatism when he focuses an the possibility that aligning cataloging practice with the "paths and tracks" of discourse and its analysis may be the means by which to build more information systems that furnish a more direct basis for intellectual exploration.
    Like Daniel Bell, the author of The Coming of Post-Industrial Society (1973), who used aspects of Marx's thinking as the basis for his social forecasting models, Warner uses Marxist thought as a tool for social and historical analysis. Unlike Bell, Warner's approach to Marx tends to be doctrinaire. As a result, "An Information View of History" and "Origins of the Human Brain," two of the essays in which Warner sets out to establish the connections between information science and information technology, are less successful. Warner argues, "the classic source for an understanding of technology as a human construction is Marx," and that "a Marxian perspective an information technology could be of high marginal Utility," noting additionally that with the exception of Norbert Wiener and John Desmond Bernal, "there has only been a limited penetration of Marxism into information science" (p. 9). But Warner's efforts to persuade the reader that these views are cogent never go beyond academic protocol. Nor does his support for the assertion that the second half of the 19th century was the critical period for innovation and diffusion of modern information technologies. The closing essay, "Whither Information Science?" is particularly disappointing, in part, because the preface and opening chapters of the book promised more than was delivered at the end. Warner asserts that the theoretical framework supporting information science is negligible, and that the discipline is limited even further by the fact that many of its members do not recognize or understand the effects of such a limitation. However cogent the charges may be, none of this is news. But the essay fails most notably because Warner does not have any new directions to offer, save that information scientists should pay closer artention to what is going an in allied disciplines. Moreover, he does not seem to understand that at its heart the "information revolution" is not about the machines, but about the growing legions of men and women who can and do write programming code to exert control over and find new uses for these devices. Nor does he seem to understand that information science, in the grip of what he terms a "quasi-global crisis," suffers grievously because it is a community situated not at the center but rather an the periphery of this revolution."

    Abstract
    Emerging as a discipline in the first half of the twentieth century, the information sciences study how people, groups, organizations, and governments create, share, disseminate, manage, search, access, evaluate, and protect information, as well as how different technologies and policies can facilitate and constrain these activities. Given the broad span of the information sciences, it is perhaps not surprising that there is no consensus regarding its underlying theory the purposes of it, the types of it, or how one goes about developing new theories to talk about new research questions. Diane H. Sonnenwald and the contributors to this volume seek to shed light on these issues by sharing reflections on the theory-development process. These reflections are not meant to revolve around data collection and analysis; rather, they focus on the struggles, challenges, successes, and excitement of developing theories. The particular theories that the contributors explore in their essays range widely, from theories of literacy and reading to theories of design and digital search. Several chapters engage with theories of the behavior of individuals and groups; some deal with processes of evaluation; others reflect on questions of design; and the rest treat cultural and scientific heritage. The ultimate goal, Sonnenwald writes in her introduction, is to "encourage, inspire, and assist individuals striving to develop and/or teach theory development.""

Den drei Herausgeberinnen, die an den Universitäten von Washington (Seattle, WA), Missouri (Columbia, MO) und Western Ontario (London, Kanada) lehren, ist das seltene Kunststück geglückt, einen Band zu erstellen, der nicht nur als mustergültige Einführung in die Thematik human information behaviour zu dienen vermag, sondern gleichzeitig auch als Nachschlagewerk zu den vielfältigen theoretischen Ansätzen innerhalb dieser bedeutenden Teildisziplin der Informationswissenschaft herangezogen werden kann. Wie sie selbst in der Danksagung feststellen, ist das Buch "a collaborative work of the information behavior community" (S. xvii), wobei die editorische Leistung vor allem darin lag, 85 Beitragende aus zehn Ländern zu koordinieren bzw. zur Abfassung von 72 Artikeln von jeweils ähnlicher Länge (bzw. Knappheit und Kürze), Gestaltung und Lesbarkeit zu veranlassen. Unter diesen 85 Beitragenden ist im übrigen alles versammelt, was in dieser Teildisziplin Rang und Namen hat, mit Ausnahme der leider bereits verstorbenen Soziologin Elfreda A. Chatman, einer der einflussreichsten Theoretikerinnen im Bereich des Informationsverhaltens, deren Andenken das Buch auch gewidmet ist.
    Im Gegensatz zur früher üblichen Praxis, Informationsverhalten auf die Aktivitäten der Informationssuche zu beschränken, folgt man heute Tom Wilsons Definition, wonach es sich dabei um "the totality of human behaviour in relation to sources and channels of information, including both active and passive information-seeking, and information use" handelt, bzw. jener von Karen Pettigrew [nunmehr Fisher] et al., "how people need, seek, give and use information in different contexts". Im Laufe der letzten Jahre, ja schon Jahrzehnte, hat sich dazu ein fast nicht mehr überschaubarer Bestand an Literatur angesammelt, der sich sowohl aus theoretischen bzw. theoretisierenden, als auch aus auch praktischen bzw. empirischen Arbeiten zusammensetzt. Einige wenige dieser theoretischen Ansätze haben weite Verbreitung gefunden, werden in Studiengängen der Informationswissenschaft gelehrt und tauchen in der laufend veröffentlichten Literatur immer wieder als Basis für empirische Untersuchungen oder modifizierende Weiterentwicklungen auf. Das Buch beginnt mit drei Grundsatzartikeln, die von herausragenden Vertretern des gegenständlichen Themenbereichs verfasst wurden. Im ersten und längsten dieser Beiträge, An Introduction to Metatheories, Theories and Models (S. 1-24), gibt Marcia J. Bates (Los Angeles, CA), zunächst eine wissenschaftstheoretische Einführung zu den drei im Titel genannten Begriffen, nicht ohne darauf hinzuweisen, dass der Großteil der theoretisierenden Ansätze in unserer Disziplin erst dem Modellstadium angehört. Am Beispiel des Principle of Least Effort zeigt sie, dass selbst für diesen am besten abgesicherten Befund der Forschung zum Informationsverhalten, keine ausreichende theoretische Begründung existiert. In der Folge versucht Bates, die in der Informationswissenschaft gängigen Metatheorien zu identifizieren und gelangt dabei zu der folgenden Kategorisierung, die auch als Bezugsrahmen für die Einordnung der zahlreichen in diesem Buch dargestellten Modelle dienen kann:
    1. historisch (die Gegenwart aus der Vergangheit heraus verstehen) 2. konstruktivistisch (Individuen konstruieren unter dem Einfluss ihres sozialen Kontexts das Verständnis ihrer Welten) 3. diskursanalytisch (Sprache konstituiert die Konstruktion der Identität und die Ausbildung von Bedeutungen) 4. philosophisch-analytisch (rigorose Analyse von Begriffen und Thesen) 5. kritische Theorie (Analyse versteckter Macht- und Herrschaftsmuster) 6. ethnographisch (Verständnis von Menschen durch Hineinversetzen in deren Kulturen) 7. sozialkognitiv (sowohl das Denken des Individuums als auch dessen sozialer bzw. fachlicher Umraum beeinflussen die Informationsnutzung) 8. kognitiv (Fokus auf das Denken der Individuen im Zusammenhang mit Suche, Auffindung und Nutzung von Information) 9. bibliometrisch (statistische Eigenschaften von Information) 10. physikalisch (Signalübertragung, Informationstheorie) 11. technisch (Informationsbedürfnisse durch immer bessere Systeme und Dienste erfüllen) 12. benutzerorientierte Gestaltung ("usability", Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion) 13. evolutionär (Anwendung von Ergebnissen von Biologie und Evolutionspsychologie auf informationsbezogene Phänomene). Bates Beitrag ist, wie stets, wohldurchdacht, didaktisch gut aufbereitet und in klarer Sprache abgefasst, sodass man ihn mit Freude und Gewinn liest. Zu letzterem trägt auch noch die umfangreiche Liste von Literaturangaben bei, mit der sich insbesondere die 13 genannten Metatheorien optimal weiterverfolgen lassen. . . .
    Zusammenfassend möchte ich folgende Behauptung wagen: Wer dieses Buch gründlich studiert (und natürlich auch die zahlreichen Literaturhinweise verfolgt), kennt mehr oder weniger alles, was es zum Themenbereich Informationsverhalten - als Teildisziplin der Informationswissenschaft - zu wissen gibt. Kann man über ein Buch noch etwas Besseres sagen? Und kann man voraussehen, welche neuen metatheoretischen Ansätze mit einer solchen Gesamtschau noch gefunden können und werden? In formaler Hinsicht bietet der Verlag Information Today mit dem vorliegenden Buch einen ansprechend gestalteten Hardcover-Band ohne größere Mängel und mit einem dem Gebotenen angemessenen Preis. Von dem fast 30 Seiten langen kombinierten Namens- und Sachregister könnten manche europäischen Verlage - die diesbezüglich eher auf Einsparung setzen oder wenig professionelle Register anbieten - lernen, wie man derlei macht. Als fehlend könnte man vielleicht einen Anhang mit den Kurzbiographien aller Beitragenden empfinden, doch mag es verständlich erscheinen, dass dies angesichts deren großer Zahl auf eine Vorstellung der drei Herausgeberinnen beschränkt wurde. Nicht gefallen hat mir der wenig konsistente Zitierstil bei den bibliographischen Angaben, einschließlich der Mode, beim Zitieren von Zeitschriftenaufsätzen vorgeblich redundante Heftangaben wegzulassen. Über die Exaltation der dritten Herausgeberin, ihrem Vornamen (auch auf dem Titelblatt!) noch den Klammerausdruck "(E. F.)" hinzuzufügen, sei rasch der Mantel des Schweigens gebreitet. In Summe daher, wie schon eingangs festgestellt wurde, ein vorzügliches und sehr empfehlenswertes Buch."

Agosto): "Due to the brevity of the entries, they serve more as introductions to a wide array of theories than as deep explorations of a select few. The individual entries are not as deep as those in more traditional reference volumes, such as The Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science (Drake, 2003) or The Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (ARIST) (Cronin, 2005), but the overall coverage is much broader. This volume is probably most useful to doctoral students who are looking for theoretical frameworks for nascent research projects or to more veteran researchers interested in an introductory overview of information behavior research, as those already familiar with this subfield also will probably already be familiar with most of the theories presented here. Since different authors have penned each of the various entries, the writing styles vary somewhat, but on the whole, this is a readable, pithy volume that does an excellent job of encapsulating this important area of information research."

The book is significant in that it captures both the rich history of partnership between the fields, and because it demonstrates clearly the incomplete nature of our understanding of that partnership. In the post-9/11 world, such understanding is increasingly important, as we struggle with the problem of transforming information into intelligence and intelligence into effective policy. Information science has an important role to play in meeting these challenges, but the sometimesambiguous nature of the field combined with similar uncertainties over what constitutes intelligence, makes any attempt at definitive answers problematic. The book is a collection of works from different contributors, in the words of one editor "not so much a created work as an aggregation" (p. 1). More than just an edited collection of papers, the book draws from the personal experiences of several prominent information scientists who also served as intelligence professionals from World War II onward. The result is a book that feels very personal and at times impassioned. The contributors attempt to shed light on an often-closed community of practice, a discipline that depends simultaneously on access to information and on secrecy. Intelligence, like information science, is also a discipline that finds itself increasingly attracted to and dependent upon technology, and an underlying question of the book is where and how technology benefits intelligence (as opposed to only masking more fundamental problems of process and analysis and providing little or no actual value).
    The role of technology in both intelligence and information science is just one question explored in Covert and Overt, which takes on more fundamental issues as well. Even the ubiquitous "What is information?" debate is revisited. But the questions asked are always subordinate to the overarching theme of bringing concepts and techniques of intelligence and information science together and examining the results. The process and lifecycle of intelligence is explored and mapped to information science methods, primarily indexing and information retrieval. In more historical explorations undertaken by contributors, it becomes apparent that intelligence and information science have always been closely aligned, but that this alignment is not always perceived by those engaged in intelligence work. Interestingly, and probably not surprisingly, a general consensus seems to be that library and information science practitioners involved in intelligence were (and are) more capable of seeing the complementary nature of the techniques information science brings to intelligence services than many intelligence professionals, who often needed demonstrations of efficacy to be convinced. Structurally, the book is divided into four parts, moving from anecdotal accounts through to discussions of definition and theory. Part 1, "Information Science and Intelligence: Reminiscences and Reflections from World War II to Today" is comprised of the personal stories of information scientists who also served as intelligence professionals at various times during and since World War II, collected from special panel presentations at the 2001 and 2002 American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) annual conferences. These contributors include former American and British servicemen and intelligence officers who all relate a common experience of dealing with information, documents, and other records in the pursuit of intelligence goals.
    This book is a successful and realistic examination of the current state of inquiry into the relationship between intelligence and information science, and does not flinch from the limits of this inquiry to date. The book can be viewed as a deliberate attempt to stimulate further interest in these studies, and serves as an excellent roadmap for future researchers (like this reviewer) who also have moved from intelligence service into information science. Many of the stories and studies in the book could easily provide fresh and vital avenues of research to new and veteran scholars. If there are limitations to the impact of the book, most must be viewed in the context of the lack of literature from which to draw. Contributions come from a variety of sources and although some new studies are included, for the most part, the chapters are not original to this publication. This results at times in a sense of the editors taking what they could get on the topic. The reader must determine whether this is viewed as a flaw or as reinforcement of the editors' conclusion that more research into the subject matter is important and necessary. It becomes a question of whether or not one wishes to answer the call. One interesting limitation, however, is the lack of a critical stance on the part of most of the contributors. The chapters tend to describe the relationship between intelligence and information science, but few question the nature of that relationship, the social construction of the two disciplines, or moral and ethical concerns associated with spying and information operations. In general, a reader is left with the impression that intelligence service is a good thing, and that information science as a discipline can both improve it as well as learn from it. Little insight is offered into the value and direction of intelligence in the 21 st century, or the impact that our technologies may have. One exception comes from Colin Burke who, in his chapter, "Intelligence Agencies, Librarians, and Information Scientists," touches on some of these issues with his claim that library and information science practitioners must "help bring the information advances from the intelligence communities to an industry that can be committed to distributing information at the lowest cost to the most people" (p. 112). Nevertheless, no serious questions regarding issues of control, power, or resistance are raised. Given recent debates over surveillance, privacy, and the erosion of civil liberties in the wake of 9-11, it would seem that this is an area of intelligence and information studies that also deserves attention. Covert and Overt is an excellent historical overview of the close relationship between intelligence and information science. The book is also intriguing and timely in its argument for further research and study into these areas. Despite the limitations of subject matter and the challenges that come with the disciplines that it explores, it is required reading for practitioners in either world who wish to gain a greater understanding of the operations of the other."

    Information ist ein allgegenwärtiger Begriff im Alltag, in den Wissenschaften und in der Philosophie. Heute wird er immer mehr von den Naturwissenschaften als ureigenster Gegenstand reklamiert: Er wird »naturalisiert«. Das Buch zeichnet den Weg nach, wie aus Physik und Mathematik Auffassungen entstehen, die über die Wissenschaftstheorie und die Sprachphilosophie zur Grundlage der Nachrichtentechnik und der Kybernetik werden, um schließlich bei der »Erbinformation« und anderen Naturgegenständen zu landen. So entsteht eine mißverstandene Form des Körper-Geist- Problems: Wie kommen technische Objekte, aber auch Moleküle im menschlichen Genom zu Eigenschaften, die ursprünglich der menschlichen Sprache vorbehalten waren? Dieses Buch korrigiert Mißverständnisse, weist heute übliche Ausdrucksweisen als (teilweise irrtümliche) Metaphern aus und rekonstruiert das menschliche Handeln und Sprechen als Grundlage von technischen und natürlichen Formen der Informationsverarbeitung.

    Abstract
    Knowledge Architectures reviews traditional approaches to managing information and explains why they need to adapt to support 21st-century information management and discovery. Exploring the rapidly changing environment in which information is being managed and accessed, the book considers how to use knowledge architectures, the basic structures and designs that underlie all of the parts of an effective information system, to best advantage. Drawing on 40 years of work with a variety of organizations, Bedford explains that failure to understand the structure behind any given system can be the difference between an effective solution and a significant and costly failure. Demonstrating that the information user environment has shifted significantly in the past 20 years, the book explains that end users now expect designs and behaviors that are much closer to the way they think, work, and act.     Abstract
    This book contributes to discussions within Information Retrieval and Science (IR&S) by improving our conceptual understanding of the relationship between humans and technology. A call to redirect the intellectual focus of information retrieval and science (IR&S) toward the phenomenon of technology-mediated experience. In this book, Sachi Arafat and Elham Ashoori issue a call to reorient the intellectual focus of information retrieval and science (IR&S) away from search and related processes toward the more general phenomenon of technology-mediated experience. Technology-mediated experience accounts for an increasing proportion of human lived experience; the phenomenon of mediation gets at the heart of the human-machine relationship. Framing IR&S more broadly in this way generalizes its problems and perspectives, dovetailing them with those shared across disciplines dealing with socio-technical phenomena. This reorientation of IR&S requires imagining it as a new kind of science: a science of technology-mediated experience (STME). Arafat and Ashoori not only offer detailed analysis of the foundational concepts underlying IR&S and other technical disciplines but also boldly call for a radical, systematic appropriation of the sciences and humanities to create a better understanding of the human-technology relationship. Arafat and Ashoori discuss the notion of progress in IR&S and consider ideas of progress from the history and philosophy of science. They argue that progress in IR&S requires explicit linking between technical and nontechnical aspects of discourse. They develop a network of basic questions and present a discursive framework for addressing these questions. With this book, Arafat and Ashoori provide both a manifesto for the reimagining of their field and the foundations on which a reframed IR&S would rest.

Augenfälligste Veränderung ist denn auch ein neues Kapitel zu »Internet und Informationswissenschaft«. »Chemical librarians« Zunächst einige Worte zu den Autoren, die dem einen oder anderen vielleicht nicht bekannt sind: Brian C. Vickery und Alina Vickery sind beide von ihrer Ausbildung her Chemiker und waren als Ehepartner (Alina Vickery starb Ende 2001) auch beruflich vielfältig gemeinsam tätig. Wie viele Chemiker (man denke nur Eugene Garfield, den Begründer der modernen Szientometrie) sensibilisiert für den Umgang mit enormen Informationsmengen und damit Informationsproblemen, zudem als »chemical librarian« (Brian C. Vickery) und Mitarbeiter von chemischen Fachzeitschriften auch professionell beschäftigt mit Fragen des Fachinformationstransfers, haben sie sich (insbesondere Brian C. Vickery) frühzeitig und kontinuierlich informationswissenschaftlich betätigt. Resultat ist eine Fülle von Publikationen, vor allem zu den Bereichen Indexieren, Klassifizieren, Information Retrieval, auch zur Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation (alle Arbeiten sind im Anhang aufgelistet). Brian C. Vickery war außerdem, das dürfte für Bibliothekare von Interesse sein, als Deputy beim Aufbau der National Lending Library for Science and Technology (NLLST) in Boston Spa beteiligt, die ihre Arbeit 1961 aufnahm und 1973 mit in die neu gegründete British Library einging. Und es sei hier schon vorab bemerkt, dass der immer wiederkehrende Bezug von informationswissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen auf die bibliothekarische Praxis ein Vorzug dieses Buches ist.
    Ungewohnte Einordnung und Gewichtung Von der Konzeption her ist das Buch am ehesten als eine Art einführendes Handbuch zu beschreiben, das sehr stark Querschnittscharakter hat. Dem entspricht die inhaltlich weit gespannte Gliederung, die die meisten informationswissenschaftlichen Bereiche streift. Die Autoren verfolgen explizit nicht das Ziel, eine Art Manual für die Informationspraxis oder für das Informationsmanagement vorzulegen, sondern versprechen einen Mix aus theoretischer Annäherung und praxisorientierter Handreichung - und enttäuschen damit nicht. Der deutsche Leser, der mit hiesigen Lehrbüchern zur Informationswissenschaft nicht gerade verwöhnt ist und sich in aller Regel aus vielen Quellen Puzzleartig sein Bild von »Informationswissenschaft« zusammenstoppeln muss (eine nach wie vor rühmliche Ausnahme sind die mehrbändigen »Grundlagen der praktischen Information und Dokumentation«, deren Neuauflage gerade erschienen sind), wird vieles, allerdings in ungewohnter Einordnung und Gewichtung, hier gesammelt vorfinden. Im Einzelnen gehen Vickery auf folgende Bereiche ein: Information und Gesellschaft, Informationstransfer in natürlichen, sozialen, maschinellen Umgebungen, Besonderheiten und Ausprägungen menschlicher Kommunikation und Informationsbedürfnisse, das gesamte Gebiet des Information Retrieval, Wissensrepräsentation, Informationsvermittlung, Informationssysteme und deren Evaluation, Internet und Informationswissenschaft.
    Soziologisch geprägt Das alles auf nicht einmal 350 Seiten: Hier kann es also immer nur um ein »Anreißen« gehen, was sich immer wieder, zum Beispiel in den Abschnitten zu Information Retrieval oder zu Formen der Wissensrepräsentation, schmerzhaft bemerkbar macht. Auf Klassifikationen, Thesauri, Formen des Abstracting und so weiter wird so gut wie nicht eingegangen. Hier ist generell zu fragen, ob die Gewichtung, die die Autoren vornehmen, sinnvoll ist. Ihr Ansatz, Informationswissenschaft zu beschreiben als »the study of the communication of information in sociery«, ist ein sehr weiter und findet seinen Niederschlag in überdimensionierten Abschnitten, die stark soziologisch geprägt sind, ohne wirklich erhellend zu sein; dazu sind die Aussagen, zum Beispiel zu Reichweiten von Kommunikation oder zu verschiedenen Kommunikationstypen, zu allgemein. Bedeutsamer, da dieser umfassende Ansatz überhaupt nicht durchgehalten wird, sondern sich immer stärker verengt hin auf Kommunikation von wissenschaftlicher Information, ist jedoch, dass auch dieses Buch letztlich den Eindruck hinterlässt, Informationswissenschaft sei ein Konglomerat miteinander relativ unverbundener Theorien und Bausteine. Dieser Eindruck, der sich beim Lesen auch deshalb immer wieder aufdrängt, weil sowohl die historische EntwicklungderDisziplin nur sehr verknappt (generell USA-zentriert) wie auch die Abgrenzung/Überschneidungzu anderen Wissenschaften wenig thematisiert wird (ganz stark spürbarim Kapitel 3 »Widercontexts of information transfer«), mildert sich etwas durch die sehr verdienstvolle Auflistung von bekannten Informationsspezialisten im Anhang und die Visualisierung der Informationswissenschaft, ihrer Zweige und bedeutender Vertreter, in Form einer Art »Landkarte«.

    In the next four chapters, Crowley takes on the particulars involved in the divide by looking at library and information professionals engaged in and transitioning to various research and theory development roles. In "The Academic as Practitioner," he examines how the publishing world influences how academics communicate with practitioners and the difficulties in writing for practitioner-oriented publications. The history of religion in the development of higher education in general, and the research focus of doctoral-degree granting institutions, is offered to explain the dominance of the academic practitioner. The paradoxical edicts of the Ohio legislature, which sought to balance classroom time for professors by law, paint a vivid picture of the results-oriented public and the research-oriented academic institution. In "The Practitioner as Academic: Adjunct Faculty/Lecturers," the question of the perceived lack of "rigor" in practitioner-conducted research is illustrated and illuminated. While Crowley points out the value of "how we did it good" research, as providing material for qualitative analysis, I found myself desiring a bit more methodological instruction. Given where and when such articles are published, how such qualitative analysis could be conducted called the value of this research into question, given the prior treatise on conducting research in an academic environment. "Other Worlds of Practice: The Field Practitioner" and "Other Worlds of Practice: The Consultant" are extremely short expositions which, while addressing alternative professionals' roles, do not significantly further the premise of the work. Nonetheless, Crowley might have been considered remiss if he had excluded these professionals.
    "Theory and Revelation" is devoted to encouraging LIS researchers, in any capacity, not to dismiss the role of faith, beliefs, and religion. The ending section presents "A Nine-Step Model for Pragmatic Research," which stops just short of being a "how-to" by not elucidating on the methodological considerations for each step. The model, while textual, bears a striking resemblance to the flow charts for approaching research found in many research instructional works, even though the entertaining of "solutions" to problems is an iterative element of the process. The text concludes with "The Foundations for Building Bridges," a fivepage summary section, almost woefully inadequate given the substantial issues developed and presented throughout the work. Crowley must be commended for his comprehensive approach to the subject, the detailed annotations, the glossary, the summary of works cited, and the index. The format of starting each chapter with a themed scenario prevented the writing from becoming dry and sleepinducing. Most of the chapters end with a specific section addressing how the issues relate to LIS. The overall structure of the text follows logically from the more theoretical to the more applicable. However, there is a definite bias towards occurrences where practitioners and academicians tend to co-exist and function in a research environment, i.e., library science and academic institutions. Information professionals working in public and community college libraries are discussed in a rather superficial manner. How cultural pragmatism can influence research and theory centered in the information science domain must still be considered in more depth than presented in this text. Further expansion on, and a critical analysis of, cultural pragmatism as a metatheoretical perspective is definitely in order. Hopefully, Spanning the Theory-Practice Divide in Library and Information Science will be an introduction to the use of cultural pragmatism in LIS research and in the development of useful theory. In response to an e-mail from me upon first reading the text, the author informed me of his contact with several other doctoral students interested in furthering their understanding of cultural pragmatism. Inspiring other professionals is certainly a testament to the value of the work and supports my recommendation for this text as essential reading for LIS professionals interested in producing research and theory that are truly useful."
