Abstract: Die diesjährige Arbeitstagung der Europäischen Patentbibliotheken fand vom 31. Mai bis zum 3. Juni 2010 in Dresden statt und stand unter dem Motto: PATLIB 2010 - Patent Information - a Business tool. Veranstalter waren das Europäische Patentamt in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Deutschen Patentamt und der Technischen Universität Dresden. Rund 250 Teilnehmer von 180 Patentbibliotheken aus 28 Ländern waren nach Dresden gekommen, um die Kooperation mit dem Amt und den Partnern weiter zu festigen, die zukünftige Entwicklung im Zeichen der Erweiterung ihrer Dienstleistungen und deren Qualitätsstandards zu diskutieren und aus Beispielen zu lernen, wie in Zukunft die Dienstleistungen noch effizienter gestaltet werden können.

Abstract: The eleventh International ISKO Conference on "Paradigms and Conceptual Systems in Knowledge Organization" was held in Rome, February 23-26, 2010. The proceedings were edited by Claudio Gnoli and Fulvio Mazzocchi and published by Ergon Verlag in 2010. This analysis follows the order of the text of the proceedings, an order prescribed from the abridged scheme for KO literature published in Knowledge Organization, 25, 1998, no. 4, p. 226. Abstract

Am 29. und 30. Oktober 2009 fand in der Königlichen Bibliothek in Den Haag das zweite internationale UDC-Seminar zum Thema "Classification at a Crossroad" statt. Organisiert wurde diese Konferenz - wie auch die erste Konferenz dieser Art im Jahr 2007 - vom UDC-Konsortium (UDCC). Im Mittelpunkt der diesjährigen Veranstaltung stand die Erschließung des World Wide Web unter besserer Nutzung von Klassifikationen (im Besonderen natürlich der UDC), einschließlich benutzerfreundlicher Repräsentationen von Informationen und Wissen. Standards, neue Technologien und Dienste, semantische Suche und der multilinguale Zugriff spielten ebenfalls eine Rolle. 135 Teilnehmer aus 35 Ländern waren dazu nach Den Haag gekommen. Das Programm umfasste mit 22 Vorträgen aus 14 verschiedenen Ländern eine breite Palette, wobei Großbritannien mit fünf Beiträgen am stärksten vertreten war. Die Tagesschwerpunkte wurden an beiden Konferenztagen durch die Eröffnungsvorträge gesetzt, die dann in insgesamt sechs thematischen Sitzungen weiter vertieft wurden.

Abstract: This study analyzes Spanish research on Knowledge Organization from 2002 to 2010. The first stage involved extraction of records from national and international databases that were interrogated. After getting the pertinent records, they we re normalized and processed according to the usual bibliometric procedure. The results point to a mature specialty follow ing the path of the past decade. There is a remarkable increase of male vs. female authors per publication, although the gender gap is not big. It is also evident that ther e is a remarkable internationalization in publication and that the content map of the specialty is more varied than in the previous decade.

Abstract

Am 21. und 22. April 2010 fand die 58. Sitzung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Verbundsysteme auf Einladung des Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz (IDS) in Zürich statt. Der folgende Bericht gibt einen Überblick über die gemeinsamen Aktivitäten der deutschsprachigen Verbünde aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz sowie eine Übersicht der aktuellen Arbeiten und Projekte der Mitglieder der AG Verbund mit Stand April 2010. Bericht u.a. über die Themenbereiche: Projekt Umstieg auf MARC21; GND; Normdateien und ONline-Schnittstelle; Kataloganreicherung; vascoda; Europeana.

Melvil Die Pläne, zusammen mit OCLC, Melvil zu einem multilingualen DDC-Dienst auszubauen, sind aus Kapazitätsgründen bei OCLC und der DNB zunächst verschoben worden, werden aber weiter verfolgt. Bei Melvil sind weitere Arbeiten ausgeführt worden, um kleinere Bugs zu beseitigen und weitere Features zu implementieren. Anfang 2010 haben OCLC und die DNB einen neuen Lizenzvertrag für die deutschen DDC-Daten abgeschlossen, sodass Teile der deutschen DDC jetzt unter Creative Commons für die nicht-kommerzielle Nutzung freigegeben sind. Die Oberfläche von MelvilSearch wurde daraufhin geändert, sodass jetzt sowohl die Klassenbezeichung, als auch die DDC-Notation auf allen DDC-Ebenen sichtbar sind."

Abstract

This article reports the author's recent research in developing a holistic model for various levels of digital library (DL) evaluation in which perceived important criteria from heterogeneous stakeholder groups are organized and presented. To develop such a model, the author applied a three-stage research approach: exploration, confirmation, and verification. During the exploration stage, a literature review was conducted followed by an interview, along with a card sorting technique, to collect important criteria perceived by DL experts. Then the criteria identified were used for developing an online survey during the confirmation stage. Survey respondents (431 in total) from 22 countries rated the importance of the criteria. A holistic DL evaluation model was constructed using statistical techniques. Eventually, the verification stage was devised to test the reliability of the model in the context of searching and evaluating an operational DL. The proposed model fills two lacunae in the DL domain: (a) the lack of a comprehensive and flexible framework to guide and benchmark evaluations, and (b) the uncertainty about what divergence exists among heterogeneous DL stakeholders, including general users.

Abstract

Argues that Beghtol's (2003) use of the terms "naive classification" and "professional classification" is valid because they are nominal definitions and that the distinction between these two types of classification points up the need for researchers in knowledge organization to broaden their scope beyond traditional classification systems intended for information retrieval.
