    Abstract
Conducting a literature review is an important activity for postgraduates and many undergraduates. Librarians can play an important role, directing students to digital libraries, compiling online subject reSource lists, and educating about the need to evaluate the quality of online resources. In order to conduct an effective literature search in a new area, however, in some subjects it is necessary to gain basic topic knowledge, including specialist vocabularies. Google's link-based page ranking algorithm makes this search engine an ideal tool for finding specialist topic introductory material, particularly in computer science, and so librarians should be teaching this as part of a strategic literature review approach.

    Abstract
The university subject librarians' role is at the centre of new models of teaching and learning, yet further debate and published contributions are still needed to shape its future direction. "Subject Librarians: Engaging with the Learning and Teaching Environment" assesses trends and challenges in current practice, and aims to encourage renewed thinking and improved approaches. Its editors and authors include experienced practitioners and academics. At a time of great change and increasing challenges in higher education, this book offers directors of academic services, library managers, librarians and lecturers a chance to reflect on the key issues and consider the needs of the learning community. "Subject Librarians: Engaging with the Learning and Teaching Environment" also provides a perspective on current practice and a reference source for students of Information Management and Information Studies.

    Abstract
In many libraries the cataloging of materials in African languages is done of necessity by librarians who have little or no background in the languages or the subject matter. Guidelines and reference tools are suggested for the non-specialist cataloger, and suggestions are made for an appropriate attitude toward the whole problem.

    Abstract
Reviews the trend away from a paper based society and towards an electronic society: with the advent of computers, electronic mail, computer conferencing, electronic invisible colleges, and the application of computers to libraries and information networks, and to publishing, with the production of electronic media. Forecasts the advent of the electronic library and the electronic librarian, the decline in the use of present day libraries, technical and library services, and the enhanced and extended role of librarians in the new situation. Predicts the eventual demise of the traditional library with the exception of non research libraries but the enhanced value of the librarians as an information specialist

    Abstract
Describes Jules Maciet's collection in the Bibliothèque des arts décoratifs, one of Paris's most accessible specialist art libraries, which offers the researcher an eclectic range of visual materials inclusing rare prints and photographs. It is an exhaustive collection still classified today according to the original system. An index of engravers, publishers and printsellers, and sources serves artists, researchers and other users

    Abstract
This article characterises the questioning behaviour in reference interviews preceding delegated online searches of bibliographic databases and relates it to questioning behaviour in other types of interviews/settings. With one exception, the unit of analysis is the question (N=610), not the interview. The author uses A.C. Graesser's typology of questions to analyse type of question and M.D. White's typology of information categories to determine the question's content objective; this is the first application of Graesser's typology to interview questions in any setting. Graesser's categories allow for a more subtle understanding of the kind of information need underlying a question. Comparisons are made between questions asked by the information specialist and those asked by the client. Findings show that the information specialist dominates the interview, about half the questions were verification questions and about 22% were judgemental questions or requests; all but four types of questions from Graesser's categories appeared in the interviews, but no new question types were discovered. Clients often phrase questions as requests. In content, both clients and information specialists focus on the subject and service requested, but the clients ask also about search strategy and output features. Both parties ask predominantly short-answer questions. Results are related to interface design for retrieval systems.

    Abstract
A study was done to test the effectiveness of retrieval using title word searching. It was based on actual search profiles used in the Mechanized Information Center at Ohio State University, in order ro replicate as closely as possible actual searching conditions. Fewer than 50% of the relevant titles were retrieved by keywords in titles. The low rate of retrieval can be attributes to three sources: titles themselves, user and information specialist ignorance of the subject vocabulary in use, and to general language problems. Across fields it was found that the social sciences had the best retrieval rate, with science having the next best, and arts and humanities the lowest. Ways to enhance and supplement keyword in title searching on the computer and in printed indexes are discussed.

    Abstract
The new paradigm of reference, in which the reference librarian becomes a consultant more than a quick-answer specialist, needs to be stretched, Mood advocates. Rather than assisting people with their research, the reference librarian needs to do the research for them. After an interview to assess the user's needs, the librarian searches various print and nonprint access tools, then presents to the patron a bibliography of sources and - possibly - copies of articles and books. This new approach to reference is needed because of both the increasing complication of libraries, with their myriad computer access points to information, and the increasing number of patrons who want information but do not want to learn how to retrieve it. This change in library reference can be implemented with better signage, more prepackaging of information, and an increased knowledge of the local community's information needs
