    Abstract
Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 22 (DDC 22) will be issued simultaneously in print and web versions in July 2003. The new edition is the first full print update to the Dewey Decimal Classification system in seven years-it includes several significant updates and many new numbers and topics. DDC 22 also features some fundamental structural changes that have been introduced with the goals of promoting classifier efficiency and improving the DDC for use in a variety of applications in the web environment. Most importantly, the content of the new edition has been shaped by the needs and recommendations of Dewey users around the world. The worldwide user community has an important role in shaping the future of the DDC.

The 1st International CDS/ISIS congress was organizes by the Columbian Association of CDS/ISIS users in cooperation with the Unesco regional office in Caracas, Venezuela. Reviews the programme including a detailed description of the CDS/ISIS library automation system which has 16.000 registered users and which can be run under MS-DOS, VAS/VMS, UNIX/INTEL or Windows. Written in the C++ programming language the system's main features unclude: portability; maintainability; upward compatibility; and client-server architecture implementation. Abstract
Reference librarians often make incorrect assumptions about the library knowledge of their users. These assumptions can impede the reference interview and influence the outcome of the reference transaction. Examines 7 misconceptions about users and discusses how librarians can correct them to better understand their public and improve reference service. the misconceptions discussed involve users: stating their actual information needs, knowing what sources to use, understanding library arrangement anf jargon, communicating with librarians, and caring about competency

    Abstract
The process of term selection for query expansion by end-users is discussed within the context of a study of interactive query expansion in a relevance feedback environment. This user study focuses on how users' perceive and understand term relationships, such as hierarchical and associative relationships, in their searches

    Abstract
The Working group on Guidelines for (electronic) national bibliographies has started the work with an analysis of users and use of national bibliographies (NB). In addition to the well known importance of NB for libraries and librarians, other users and their requirements were identified. The results are presented and discussed; both existing and potential users and use were taken into account. The group will continue the work by specifying the functionality to support the various needs of different users.

    Abstract
With the many choices that can be built into information systems, it is possible to customize such systems for users, based on the tasks that users are accomplishing, on the personal characteristics of users, or a combination of these factors. Reports results of an experiment which detailed logging of use of experimental information systems and was used to determine the optimal configuration of these systems for each user. 4 experimental systems were specially designed and all used a single database of 668 bibliographic records. Tasks were varied, and the cognitive abilities of users were tested to assess one important personal characteristic. Results showed that it was possible to create an optimal configuration to match the cognitive abilities of users, but that it was more difficult to assess which configuration was the best match for specific tasks. The person in task interaction proved to be the least powerful indicator of design configurations. These results suggest that usable information systems can be created for users by careful analysis of the interaction of design features with personal characteristics such as cognitive abilities

    Abstract
This paper considers the need to relate users need(s) as requirement for WeSEs in a dynamic context. User-centred evaluative methodology was used to propose a First-order Measurement Model (FoMM) with baseline characteristics using factor analysis. Results obtained showed that FoMM demonstrated reasonable model fit. The assumption is that criteria (or factors) encapsulate users' needs; hence they were translated into users' requirement for WeSEs using the qualitative evaluative approach. We therefore infer that WeSE's success in the delivery of assistance to users, particularly in a dynamic context must be based, not only on the progress of technology, but also on users' requirements.

    Abstract
Inquiries made by academic library users are more complex than they may appear. Successful information retrieval based on complex queries is a function of cataloguing, classification, and the librarian's interpretation. Explores aspects of complexitiy using a proposed query as an example
