    Abstract
Reports on a dramatic shift from subject to periodical title searching at Colorado University Libraries. States possible reasons for the change, examines problems encountered by users with searching the periodical title index and suggests how this change in online catalogue searching may affect future catalogue design and bibliographic instruction

    Abstract
The growing interest in end user or direct patron access to on-line bibliographic databases is reviewed with references to online catalogues, databases, and CD-ROMs. The literature of end user searching is surveyed with notes on: user training, software search aids, end user services in libraries: characterisation of end user searches; the role of librarians; and CD-ROMs as end user media

    Abstract
Reviews Ovid searching software, a system for searching and manipulating output from bibliographic databases. It allows fields of indexes to be searched, or for terms of a controlled vocabulary to be mapped, provides a variety of display options and permits customisation of system features. Output may be directed to e-mail. Ovid interface with over 80 commercial databases to exploit the features of each. Covers vendor and user profiles; operating environment; user interface, search strategies; display and manipulation of documents; and documentation

    Abstract
Librarians responsible for organizing access to library collections have an obligation to plan for the future. Developments in the world of information which will inevitably have an impact on how they do their jobs include new forms of media, new cataloguing tools and standards, and new methods of creating, acquiring, and searching for data. Equally if not more important, new models are needed for the range of services which bibliographic control units are working to provide, and for the roles which these units will play in the larger organization

    Abstract
Libraries, their collections, and bibliographic control are essential components of the provision of access to recorded knowledge. Cataloging is a primary method of bibliographic control. Full or traditional cataloging is very expensive, but relying on keyword searching is inadequate. Alternatives for a solution to cataloging needs for electronic resources including the use of metadata and the Dublin Core are examined. Many questions exist regarding the long-term future of today's electronic documents. Recommendations are made for preserving recorded knowledge and information in the electronic resources for future generations

    Abstract
Subject access in the OPAC, as discussed in this article, is predicated on two different kinds of searching: subject (authority, alphabetic, or controlled vocabulary searching) or keyword (uncontrolled, free text, natural language vocabulary). The literature has focused on demonstrating that both approaches are needed, but very few authors address the need to integrate keyword into authority searching. The article discusses this difference and compares, with a query on the term garbage, search results in two online catalogs, one that performs keyword searches through the authority file and one where only bibliographic records are included in keyword searches.

    Abstract
This paper looks at one approach to controlling costs when seeking cataloging copy. A small task group in the University of Minnesota Libraries Technical Services Department conducted a study to devise the most cost-effective strategy for searching for and importing bibliographic copy, by compiling costs and benefits of importing records from the OCLC Online Computer Library Center database, the Research Libraries Group Union Catalog (RLIN), and the Library of Congress (LC) catalog. Results of the study indicated that, although the LC database is smaller than the other two utilities, a sufficient portion of needed records were available from LC to more than offset the cost of re-searching in the other databases for records not found. In addition, due to differences in pricing structure, searching RLIN second was found to be more cost effective than going next to OCLC, even though a slightly larger proportion of items were found in OCLC than RLIN. This study may prove useful either as a research method or in terms of its findings for other libraries wishing to compare sources of cataloging copy.

    Abstract
ALEPH, Israel's research library network, was implemented as a highly decentralized network consisting of nearly 30 different files and no union catalogue. To solve the problem of searching these separate files, the Union List of Monographs was implemented in 1991. In reality, neither a union list nor confined to monographs, the Union List of Monographs is, in effect, a union index for locating bibliographic items by author or title, in order to ascertain where they can be found without searching each library's file separately. Reviews the literature of merging files and records, and describes the development of an algorithm for producing the Union List of Monographs

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
An evidence-based practice approach to search interface design is proposed, with the goal of designing interfaces that adequately support search strategy formulation and reformulation. Relevant findings from studies of information professionals' searching behaviors, end users' searching of bibliographic databases, and search behaviors on the Web are highlighted. Three brief examples are presented to illustrate the ways in which findings from such studies can be used to make decisions about the design of search interfaces. If academic research can be effectively connected with design practice, we can discover which design practices truly are best practices and incorporate them into future search interfaces.

    Abstract
The paper presents a coword-analysis-based system called SDOC which is able to pupport the intellectual work of an end-user who is searching for information in a bibliographic database. This is done by presenting its thematical structure as a map of keyword clusters (themes) on a graphical user interface. These mapping facilities are demonstrated on the basis of the research field Social History given by a set of documents from the social science literature database SOLIS. Besides the traditional way of analysing a coword map as a strategic diagram, the notion of cluster relationships analysis is introduced which provides an adequate interpretation of links between themes
