Abstract

Multisource web news portals provide various advantages such as richness in news content and an opportunity to follow developments from different perspectives. However, in such environments, news variety and quantity can have an overwhelming effect. New-event detection and topic-tracking studies address this problem. They examine news streams and organize stories according to their events; however, several tracking stories of an event/topic may contain no new information (i.e., no novelty). We study the novelty detection (ND) problem on the tracking news of a particular topic. For this purpose, we build a Turkish ND test collection called BilNov-2005 and propose the usage of three ND methods: a cosine-similarity (CS)-based method, a language-model (LM)-based method, and a cover-coefficient (CC)-based method. For the LM-based ND method, we show that a simpler smoothing approach, Dirichlet smoothing, can have similar performance to a more complex smoothing approach, Shrinkage smoothing. We introduce a baseline that shows the performance of a system with random novelty decisions. In addition, a category-based threshold learning method is used for the first time in ND literature. The experimental results show that the LM-based ND method significantly outperforms the CS- and CC-based methods, and category-based threshold learning achieves promising results when compared to general threshold learning.

Abstract

Mit der Auslieferung der ersten Ausgabe im Januar 2003 löste der Neuerscheinungsdienst (ND) Der Deutschen Bibliothek den CIP-Dienst ab. Über die Gründe für die Neukonzeption der Dienstleistungen bezüglich der Vorankündigungen, über die Ziele und die Funktion des neuen Dienstes sowie über seine ersten Ausgaben wurde bereits im Detail berichtet". Nur soviel sei in Erinnerung gerufen: Die Deutsche Bibliothek bietet neben ihren anderen Dienstleistungen nun je einen auf die jeweilige Funktion zugeschnittenen Spezialdienst für Erwerbung bzw. Katalogisierung an: Für Erwerbungszwecke ist dies der Neuerscheinungsdienst, der die Verlegermeldungen anzeigt, die parallel dazu auch in das VLB aufgenommen werden. Die Titeldaten der Verleger werden in Der Deutschen Bibliothek mit Sachgruppen versehen, ansonsten aber nicht weiter bearbeitet. Sie enthalten keine hierarchischen Verknüpfungen und ihre Personen- oder Körperschaftseintragungen sind nicht mit den entsprechenden Normdateien PND und GKD verknüpft. Die Daten sind insoweit standardisiert, als dies von dem für die VLB-Meldungen verwendeten ONIX-Format verlangt wird und sie dem Regelwerk des VLB entsprechen, und unter bibliothekarischen Gesichtspunkten teilweise von heterogener Qualität. Für Katalogisierungszwecke werden natürlich weiterhin die Daten der Reihen A, B und C der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie für Eigenkatalogisierung angeboten, deren »autopsierte« Daten nationalbibliografisch autorisiert sind und als endgültige Katalogisate ohne weitere Korrekturen übernommen werden können. Diese beiden Dienste ergänzen sich gegenseitig und sie beide, nicht der Neuerscheinungsdienst allein, sind als funktionale Nachfolger des CIP-Dienstes anzusehen. Um die Nutzbarkeit der beiden Dienste weiter zu verbessern, hat Die Deutsche Bibliothek in den vergangenen eineinhalb Jahren eine ganze Reihe von Maßnahmen ergriffen, auf die hier näher eingegangen werden soll. Dabei sind vor allem auch Anregungen und Kritik berücksichtigt worden, die verschiedene Dienstleistungsbezieher zu den ersten Ausgaben des Neuerscheinungsdienstes dankenswerterweise geäußert haben. Die wichtigsten Einzelpunkte sind im Folgenden vorangestellt. Die statistischen Angaben beziehen sich auf das Jahr 2003, in dem insgesamt ca. 94.000 Titelmeldungen im Neuerscheinungsdienst angezeigt worden sind. - Bereits in der Deutschen Nationalbibliografie angezeigte Titel werden nochmals im ND angezeigt: Durch einen Dublettencheck werden seit März 2003 bereits in der Datenbank Der Deutschen Bibliothek vorhandene Titel erkannt und nicht mehr in den ND übernommen. - Es werden vermehrt Titel ausländischer Verlage ohne deutschen Verlagssitz angezeigt: So genannte NSG-Titel, d. h. Titel, die nicht in das Sammelgebiet Der Deutschen Bibliothek gehören, werden nicht übernommen, soweit sie als solche erkennbar sind. Dazu zählen auch alle Titel von ausländischen Verlagen ohne deutschen Verlagssitz. Zur Information sei erwähnt, dass von den 2003 im ND angezeigten Titeln 96 % eine ISBN mit der Länderkennzeichnung »3-« hatten.

The OCLC OLUC is arguably the world's foremost bibliographic database in terms of number of participating libraries,a nd depth and breadth of coverage. Abstract

A taxonomy of 11 sources of information used during library and database searching is presented, based on observation of 49 searches in a variety of libraries and search situations. Three broad categories of sources are idetified: those internal to the searcher; those created by the searcher; and those external to the searcher. Internal sources are reason for the search, necessary beliefs, object knowledge, domain knowledge,a nd search knowledge. 2 sources created by the searcher are expressed objects and searcher terms. External sources of information that are encountered in the search environment are guidance devices, system terms, and the collection. Found object, a subset of the collection, is also what is taken away from the library or IR system

Abstract

Explores the question of whether academic libraries keep up with the changes in the LCSH system. Analysis of the handling of 15 subject headings in 50 academic library catalogues available via the Internet found that libraries are not consistently maintaining subject authority control, or making syndetic references and scope notes in their catalogues. Discusses the results from the perspective of the libraries' performance, performance on the headings overall, performance on references, performance on the type of change made to the headings,a nd performance within 3 widely used onlien catalogue systems (DRA, INNOPAC and NOTIS). Discusses the implications of the findings in relationship to expressions of dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of subject cataloguing expressed by discussion groups on the Internet
