    Abstract
Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 22 (DDC 22) will be issued simultaneously in print and web versions in July 2003. The new edition is the first full print update to the Dewey Decimal Classification system in seven years-it includes several significant updates and many new numbers and topics. DDC 22 also features some fundamental structural changes that have been introduced with the goals of promoting classifier efficiency and improving the DDC for use in a variety of applications in the web environment. Most importantly, the content of the new edition has been shaped by the needs and recommendations of Dewey users around the world. The worldwide user community has an important role in shaping the future of the DDC.

    Abstract
The "Relative Index" of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is investigated over the span of its lifetime in 22 editions of the DDC as to its character as a concept indexing system, its provision of conceptual contexts for the terms it lists, and the way in which the index intersects with special tables of categories used in the system. Striking features of the index that are discussed include how the locater function of an index is expressed in it, its practice of including concepts that have not been given specific notational locations in the system, its two methods of providing conceptual contexts for indexed terms (by means of the notation of the system and by the insertion of enhancement terms that portray conceptual context), and how the index has intersected with three types of special tables of categories in the system. Critical issues raised include the indexing of constructed or synthesized complex concepts, inconsistencies in how enhancement terms are portrayed and the absence of them in some instances, the problem of equating conceptual context with disciplinary context, and problems associated with not indexing one type of special table. Summary and conclusions are extended to problems that arise in studying the index.

    Abstract
In this work we develop new journal classification methods based on the h-index. The introduction of the h-index for research evaluation has attracted much attention in the bibliometric study and research quality evaluation. The main purpose of using an h-index is to compare the index for different research units (e.g. researchers, journals, etc.) to differentiate their research performance. However the h-index is defined by only comparing citations counts of one's own publications, it is doubtful that the h index alone should be used for reliable comparisons among different research units, like researchers or journals. In this paper we propose a new global h-index (Gh-index), where the publications in the core are selected in comparison with all the publications of the units to be evaluated. Furthermore, we introduce some variants of the Gh-index to address the issue of discrimination power. We show that together with the original h-index, they can be used to evaluate and classify academic journals with some distinct advantages, in particular that they can produce an automatic classification into a number of categories without arbitrary cut-off points. We then carry out an empirical study for classification of operations research and management science (OR/MS) journals using this index, and compare it with other well-known journal ranking results such as the Association of Business Schools (ABS) Journal Quality Guide and the Committee of Professors in OR (COPIOR) ranking lists.

    Abstract
Comments on Douglas Hofstadter's index to his book 'Le ton beau de Marot: in praise of the music of language'. Hofstadter took charge of the book design, typography, typesetting and copy-editing, and also compiled the index which covers 23 pages of 3 columnes and is set in a practically illegible 4-point. Although the index breaks all the rules of indexing, it is a masterly creation showing the author's industry, exhuberance and wit. Summarizes Hofstadter's own remarks on how creating the index gave hin new insights into what his book was essentially about

    Abstract
Wordmanship is a humorous dictionary cum index. Analyzing its structure, considers general aspects of the design of a reference work in relation to its index. Indexers should be consulted at the design stage of reference books, as they may suggest reversal of the primary entries, and the index entries; refine the cross-reference-structure; revise locator notation; and select appropriate typography

    Abstract
Over a 35-year period, Irving H. Sher played a critical role in the development and implementation of the Science Citation Index and other ISI products. Trained as a biochemist, statistician, and linguist, Sher brought a unique combination of talents to ISI as Director of Quality Control and Director of Research and Development. His talents as a teacher and mentor evoked loyalty. He was a particularly inventive but self-taught programmer. In addition to the SCI, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index,

    Abstract
Reviews the cumulative index to LISA, the leading English language abstracting journal on librarianship and information science and maintains that the index is a vital reference tool for those who do not have access to an on-line search service. Dascribes the index which is arranged in sequences of name and subject. Maintains that the introduction could be longer as the name index in particular requires more explanation, and illustrates by means of axamples. Lists strengths and weaknesses of the name index. Asserts that the subject index will receive greater use and warrants some explanation which is not provided. Suggests that the value of chain indexing is negated by divorce from classification. Affirms the enormous value of the work as an indispensable reference tool
