    Abstract
In the aftermath of the publication in 1996 of the famous spoof article by the New York University physicist Alan Sokal many scientists and mathematicians have considered the thesis of social constructivists-those specialists in science studies who maintain that science is shaped by social and cultural factors-as discredited. Sokal's article was, indeed, very clever, and he was correct in ridiculing the views of the most extreme social constructivists. The basic issue of the controversy remains, however, unresolved. To what extent are science and mathematics affected by the society in which they are developed? In this article I will maintain that even the mathematical equations used by outstanding physicists sometimes display attributes of their social environment. In a book I published in 1998 I argued that Russia was a particularly appropriate environment in which to test the social constructivist hypothesis. In the twentieth century Russia has had a large scientific establishment in a social, economic, political, and philosophical environment quite different from that of leading Western countries. If environmental factors affect science, the effects of those factors should show up in Russia. I concluded that these effects do indeed manifest themselves in Russian science, but that, perhaps surprisingly, Russian science reveals both the strengths and the weaknesses of the social constructivist hypothesis. An example of the weakness of the social constructivist thesis can be found in the overthrow of Lysenkoism biology in 1966, when Soviet biologists embraced the same biological principles as Western biologists after decades of rejecting these principles. This tardy but eventually successful worldwide agreement illustrated the universalism of much of science when open debate is permitted, and the existence of an objective biological world studied by biologists everywhere. The rejection of Lysenkoism showed that reality in nature does matter

    Abstract
Is this book sociology, anthropology, or taxonomy? Sorting Things Out, by communications theorists Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star, covers a lot of conceptual ground in its effort to sort out exactly how and why we classify and categorize the things and concepts we encounter day to day. But the analysis doesn't stop there; the authors go on to explore what happens to our thinking as a result of our classifications. With great insight and precise academic language, they pick apart our information systems and language structures that lie deeper than the everyday categories we use. The authors focus first on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), a widely used scheme used by health professionals worldwide, but also look at other health information systems, racial classifications used by South Africa during apartheid, and more. Though it comes off as a bit too academic at times (by the end of the 20th century, most writers should be able to get the spelling of McDonald's restaurant right), the book has a clever charm that thoughtful readers will surely appreciate. A sly sense of humor sneaks into the writing, giving rise to the chapter title "The Kindness of Strangers," for example. After arguing that categorization is both strongly influenced by and a powerful reinforcer of ideology, it follows that revolutions (political or scientific) must change the way things are sorted in order to throw over the old system. Who knew that such simple, basic elements of thought could have such far-reaching consequences? Whether you ultimately place it with social science, linguistics, or (as the authors fear) fantasy, make sure you put Sorting Things Out in your reading pile.

    Abstract

Northern Light is an innovative service which creatively blends Web and proprietary online searching. It simultaneously searches the Web and a large, multidisciplinary, full text database, using a relevance system with some clever tweaks. Its risky pricing scheme depends upon users' willingness to pay for proprietary content
