Das geschieht mühelos und in einem Bruchteil einer Sekunde; und doch steckt dahinter eine hochkomplexe Wahrnehmungsleistung. Viele der dabei ablaufenden Verarbeitungsvorgänge sind weit davon entfernt, verstanden oder gar in nachvollziehbare Algorithmen abgebildet zu werden. Noch erstaunlicher als diese Diskrepanz zwischen der internen Komplexität und der erlebten Leichtigkeit des visuellen Erlebens ist es, wie sicher und stabil unsere Wahrnehmung trotzdem ist. Zahlreiche, manchmal frappierende Abbildungen führen unseren Wahrnehmungsapparat in die Irre und offenbaren damit ein schwaches Echo der Algorithmen, die im Hintergrund unsere visuelle Welt konstruieren. In sieben Kapiteln erörtert der Autor praktisch alle Aspekte der visuellen Wahrnehmung und die dazugehörigen Täuschungen von Raum, Fläche, Farbe, Bewegung und Entfernungssehen. Besonders faszinierend und verblüffend sind dabei die Abschnitte über mehrdeutige Wahrnehmungen und mehrere »autokinetische Bilder«, die ständig in Bewegung zu sein scheinen, obgleich sie ganz gewöhnlich auf Papier gedruckt sind. Als umfangreiches Bilderbuch der optischen Täuschungen ist das Werk eine wahre Fundgrube. Leider wird der gute erste Eindruck durch den Text deutlich getrübt. Man kann ja durchaus die Auseinandersetzung mit einem schwierigen wissenschaftlichen Thema als Reise darstellen; aber so, wie Ditzinger einen Busfahrer inklusive einer Schafherde mehrfach bemüht, um bestimmte Sachverhalte darzustellen, wirkt es reichlich gequält. Einige Passagen sind in etwa so verdaulich wie ein Physikbuch der 1970er Jahre. Typische Anfängerfehler haben die Schlusskorrektur unbeschadet überstanden; so nennt Ditzinger die farbempfindlichen Rezeptorzellen in der Netzhaut durchgängig »Zäpfchen« statt Zapfen. Ausgerechnet bei der ersten Abbildung, die eine Wahrnehmungsillusion zeigt, sind in der Beschreibung linkes und rechtes Auge verwechselt, sodass man die Täuschung nur erlebt, wenn man sich nicht an die Textbeschreibung hält. Auch das Fehlen der Rasterung in einer Abbildung eines Malteserkreuzes (S. 75) lässt den unbedarften Leser zunächst ratlos. Erst auf den folgenden Seiten ist das Kreuz dann so abgebildet, dass sich die beschriebene Illusion einstellt. In einigen weiteren Abbildungen, welche die Ideen der Gestalttheorie zum Inhalt haben, treibt die erwähnte Schafherde auch grafisch ihr Unwesen. Das sind wohl die »mit den Möglichkeiten der modernen Computergrafik ... neu gestalteten« Illusionen, die das Vorwort preist (das Werk ist eine überarbeitete Neuauflage eines vor einigen Jahren im Südwest-Verlag erschienenen Buchs). Da wären die bekannten klassischen Strichzeichnungen der Gestalttheoretiker prägnanter gewesen. Trotzdem ist Ditzingers Buch ein umfassendes Kompendium optischer Wahrnehmungsillusionen, die der Leser ansonsten nur über diverse Fachbücher verstreut finden würde. Da kann man angesichts der Materialfülle und des günstigen Preises die genannten Mängel wohl verschmerzen."

    Abstract
    Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.
