    Abstract
Fac-Back-OPAC is a faceted back up OPAC. This advanced catalog offers features that compare favorably with the traditional catalogs for today's library systems. Fac-Back-OPAC represents the convergence of two prominent trends in library tools: the decoupling of discovery tools from the traditional integrated library system and the use of readily available open source components to rapidly produce leading-edge technology for meeting patron and library needs. Built on code that was originally developed by Casey Durfee in February 2007, Fac-Back-OPAC is available for no cost under an open source license to any library that wants to offer an advanced search interface or a backup catalog for its patrons.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Open source software development is becoming increasingly popular as a way of producing software, due to a number of factors. It is argued in this paper that these factors may have a significant impact on the future of information retrieval (IR) systems, and that it is desirable that these systems are made open to all. Some problems are outlined that may prevent the uptake of open source IR systems and a number of open source IR systems are described.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of open source to a non-technical audience and give an overview of its current and potential applications in libraries. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is based on a literature review. Findings - Open source already aids libraries and has great potential but is hobbled by its intrinsically technical appeal. Originality/value - The paper makes observations about information technology trends which might affect the take up of open source and introduces open source comprehensively but succinctly.

    Abstract
One might argue that the future of knowledge work is manifested in how open-source communities work. Knowledge work, as argued by Drucker (1968); Davenport, Thomas, and Cantrell (2002); and others, is comprised of specialists who collaborate via exchange of know-how and skills to develop products and services. This is exactly what an open-source community does. To this end, in this brief communication we conduct an examination of open-source communities and generate insights an how to augment current knowledge management practices in organizations. The goal is to entice scholars to transform closed knowledge management agendas that exist in organizations to ones that are representative of the open-source revolution.
