- Abstract
- Wir leben in einer Wissensgesellschaft, die freien Zugang zu Informationen ermöglicht. Doch ist längst eine paradoxe Situation entstanden: Wissen ist gefährlich. Die Möglichkeiten, Wissen zu erwerben, können zu erheblichen Konflikten führen. "Was darf ich wissen?" Diese Frage könnte in unserem Informationszeitalter zu einer Schlüsselfrage werden. Wer Wissen erwirbt, noch dazu technisches Wissen, kann schnell an den Rand der Legalität geraten. Je mehr Technologien vermögen, desto weniger wird das Wissen über diese Technologien frei verfügbar. Wir müssen uns daher mehr und mehr mit dem bizarren Konzept des "Verbrechens der Vernunft" auseinandersetzen, damit, daß frei erworbene Erkenntnisse aus wirtschaftlichen, politischen oder militärischen Gründen als illegal erklärt werden. So gehört es zu den Absurditäten des Patentrechts, daß Konzerne in großem Umfang neue und auch zu erwartende Entwicklungen schützen lassen und damit andere Erfindungen blockieren; ein Geistesblitz kann dann schnell eine Verletzung des Patentrechts bedeuten. Ob es um Atomphysik geht, um Gentechnik oder Computerprogramme - der Physiknobelpreisträger Robert B. Laughlin enthüllt in seinem Essay die Mechanismen der Geheimhaltung von Wissen und zeigt anhand von vielen Beispielen, daß bald ein neues Dunkles Zeitalter beginnen könnte, dessen Kennzeichen nicht Information und Wissen sind, sondern Desinformation und Ignoranz.

Laughlins Streitschrift »Das Verbrechen der Vernunft« verspricht interessante Lektüre für Bibliothekare: »Mitten drin«, so der Autor, sind wir schon in »Orwells Welt« (Seite 13), die Freiheit der Forschung schon aufgegeben. Und Laughlin müsste es wissen: Der Physik-Nobelpreisträger von 1998 forscht und lehrt selbst an der renommierten Stanford University. Assoziativ und anekdotisch Ein wichtiges Thema packt Laughlin da an: Wir sind auf dem falschen Weg. Staat und Unternehmen schränken ein, was gewusst und geforscht werden darf, und Forscher und Bürger nehmen es hin, ohne dafür etwas zu bekommen. Daher leiht man der Warnung gern seine Aufmerksamkeit, auch um zu erfahren, was wohl dagegen zu tun wäre. Doch diese Hoffnung wird enttäuscht. Laughlin hat wenig positive Botschaften und verliert sich in Anekdoten und Kleinigkeiten. Sein Gedankengang wirkt oft assoziativ und eher anekdotisch als argumentierend, das heißt, das Vorgetragene baut nicht recht aufeinander auf. Schnell ist er mit Worten wie »Orwell« bei der Hand, formuliert ansonsten aber recht sorglos und ungenau.* Dafür, dass das Buch zuerst auf Deutsch erschien, nimmt der Inhalt ohnehin wenig Rücksicht auf die deutsche beziehungsweise europäische Situation. Dabei gäbe es hier einiges anders zu bewerten; wir haben ja mit Artikel 5 des Grundgesetzes ein Grundrecht auf Informationsfreiheit. Doch im Einzelnen: In zehn lose miteinander verbundenen Kapiteln geht Laughlin der Frage nach, in welcher Form und aus welchem Grund der »freie Zugang zum Wissen« in der Gegenwart eingeschränkt ist. . . .
Die Lektüre des Buches ist also, das muss man leider zusammenfassend feststellen, nur zum Teil erhellend. Laughlin gelingt es selten, das Wichtige vom Unwichtigen zu scheiden, um es in einer klaren gedanklichen Gliederung zu präsentieren. Bleibt also positiv hervorzuheben, dass Laughlin sich eines wichtigen Themas angenommen hat, wenngleich er damit eher zum eigenen Denken als zum Nach-Denken anregt."

- Abstract
- Die Vorstellung, daß der historische Wandel grundsätzlich zu einer Verbesserung der menschlichen Verhältnisse führt, ist menschheitsgeschichtlich gesehen eine junge Idee. Bis in die neuzeit hinein war die grundlegende Erfahrung die Wiederkehr des Gleichen. Vorbereitet durch das intellektuelle Autonomiestreben des Spätmittelalters hat sich der Fortschrittsgedanke seit der Aufklärung gegen die immer wieder auftretenden Verfallstheorien und gegen das zyklische Geschichtsverständnis durchgesetzt. Dabei wirkten mit: die säkulare Geschichtsdeutung, die Erfolge der aufkommenden Naturwissenschaften, die globale Ausweitung des Erfahrungshorizonts und konkrete politische und soziale Fortschrittserfahrungen. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung wurden die verschiedenen Arten des Geschichtenerzählens zu Aspekten der einen, universellen Weltgeschichte, deren geheime Mitte die Fortschrittsidee bildet. Weil der Fortschrittsgedanke 'die letzte Religion der Gebildeten' geworden ist, wird ein Ausbleiben des Fortschritts als allgemeiner Sinnverlust erfahren. Die Besinnung auf die Bedeutung und auf die historische Entwicklung der Fortschrittsidee zeigt, wie der Gedanke zum Schicksal werden kann. Zugleich wird deutlich, daß die Erkenntnis Distanz gegenüber der konkreten Situation - und damit Freiheit - möglich macht

- Abstract
- Als Erfinder des «Allgemeinen» gilt, gemäß dem Bericht des Aristoteles und seit diesem Bericht, Sokrates. Er ist es, der nicht mehr danach suchte, woraus ein Ding zu dem geworden ist, was es ist, oder wie es entstanden ist, sondern danach, «was [ein Ding] ist», und somit ist Sokrates der erste gewesen, der die Herausarbeitung des Allgemeinen (?a?????) forderte und mit seinen Fragen seine Gesprächspartner zu dieser Herausarbeitung trieb bzw. lockte; die Definition (???sµ??) war das Ziel des sokratischen Gesprächs, und die sokratische Aporie war das Vehikel.

- Abstract
- Das Historische Wörterbuch der Philosophie (HWPh), im Zeitraum von 1971 bis 2007 unter Mitwirkung von mehr als 1500 Fachgelehrten entstanden, ist eines der umfassendsten, bedeutendsten und auch erfolgreichsten Publikationsprojekte der jüngeren deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Lexika oder Enzyklopädien basiert das HWPh nicht auf einer Geschichte philosophischer Ideen oder Probleme, sondern auf der Geschichte der philosophischen Begriffe. In 12 Textbänden sowie einem abschliessenden Registerband dokumentiert das Lexikon in 17144 Spalten und rund 6000 Artikeln anhand zahlreicher präziser Belege und Stellenangaben Herkunft und Genese von insgesamt 3670 philosophischen Begriffen und beschreibt den Wandel ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion von ihrem ersten Auftreten bis heute. Das Konzept der begriffsgeschichtlichen Methode macht sowohl synchronisch Stellung und Bedeutung einzelner Begriffe in bestimmten Epochen oder bei bestimmten Philosophinnen und Philosophen als auch diachronisch deren Bedeutungsveränderungen innerhalb der abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte nachvollziehbar. Um die spezifisch philosophische Begriffsarbeit im Kontext des gesamten Wissenschaftssystems zu veranschaulichen, werden zudem auch Begriffe aus angrenzenden Fachgebieten - Theologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik, Soziologie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Politik, Jurisprudenz, Medizin sowie aus den Naturwissenschaften - behandelt.

- Abstract
- Eine der wesentlichen Aufgaben als Fachreferent*in ist die inhaltliche Erschließung der neuerworbenen Literatur, sowie die Begutachtung und Auswahl der neu erschienenen Werke in den jeweiligen Fachgebieten hinsichtlich der Relevanz für die eigenen Sammlungen gemäß dem Sammlungsprofil der TU Wien Bibliothek. Im Zuge der Corona-Krise wurde die herkömmliche Arbeitsweise in der Sacherschließung beeinträchtigt, und es haben sich neue Herausforderungen, aber auch Möglichkeiten ergeben. Neben der fehlenden Autopsie der Literatur leidet auch die Sichtung und Erwerbung neuer Literatur unter der physischen Abwesenheit vom Arbeitsplatz bzw. der entsprechenden technischen Infrastruktur. Auch der persönliche Austausch mit den Kolleg*innen wurde deutlich erschwert. Neben den Schwierigkeiten wurden aber auch die neuen Handlungsoptionen auf beruflicher und individueller Ebene positiv gesehen. In dem Artikel werden unsere individuellen Erfahrungen an der TU Wien Bibliothek sowie Ausblicke in die Zukunft wiedergegeben.

- Abstract
- Die französische Philosophie der Gegenwart hat die Probleme der Moderne in ungewöhnlicher Schärfe zum Ausdruck gebracht. In ihrem Zentrum steht die Kritik der Rationalität, in den 80er Jahren beherrschte sie die Debatte um die Postmoderne. Weil sie sich von der Krise herausfordern läßt, polarisiert sie die Gemüter. Während die einen sie als neuen Irrationalismus geißeln, bejubeln die anderen die Destruktion der Metaphysik und setzen die »Differenz« absolut. Die italienische Philosophie, obwohl deutlich beeinflußt von den französischen Meisterdenkern, kommentiert deren Rationalitätskritik kritisch, bringt Korrekturen an und sucht neue Antworten. Der vorliegende Band bietet Orientierung für alle philosophisch Interessierten. Zwölf Porträts und zwei Gespräche lassen die Konturen eines produktiven philosophischen Spannungsfeldes sichtbar werden, zu dem so unterschiedliche Geister wie Claude Lévi-Strauss und Umberto Eco zählen.

- Abstract
- Werden Maschinen mit Begriffen beschrieben, die ursprünglich der Beschreibung des Menschen dienen, so liegt zunächst der Verdacht nahe, dass jene Maschinen spezifischmenschliche Fähigkeiten oder Eigenschaften besitzen. Für körperliche Fähigkeiten, die mechanisch nachgeahmt werden, hat sich in der Alltagssprache eine anthropomorphisierende Sprechweise bereits etabliert. So wird kaum in Frage gestellt, dass bestimmte Maschinen weben, backen, sich bewegen oder arbeiten können. Bei nichtkörperlichen Eigenschaften, etwa kognitiver, sozialer oder moralischer Art sieht dies jedoch anders aus. Dass mittlerweile intelligente und rechnende Maschinen im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch Eingang gefunden haben, wäre jedoch undenkbar ohne den langjährigen Diskurs über Künstliche Intelligenz, welcher insbesondere die zweite Hälfte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts geprägt hat. In jüngster Zeit ist es der Autonomiebegriff, welcher zunehmend Verwendung zur Beschreibung neuer Technologien findet, wie etwa "autonome mobile Roboter" oder "autonome Systeme". Dem Begriff nach rekurriert die "Autonomie" jener Technologien auf eine bestimmte Art technologischen Fortschritts, die von der Fähigkeit zur Selbstgesetzgebung herrührt. Dies wirft aus philosophischer Sicht jedoch die Frage auf, wie die Selbstgesetzgebung in diesem Fall definiert ist, zumal sich der Autonomiebegriff in der Philosophie auf die politische oder moralische Selbstgesetzgebung von Menschen oder Menschengruppen beziehungsweise ihre Handlungen bezieht. Im Handbuch Robotik hingegen führt der Autor geradezu beiläufig die Bezeichnung "autonom" ein, indem er prognostiziert, dass "[.] autonome Roboter in Zukunft sogar einen Großteil der Altenbetreuung übernehmen werden."

- Die Philosophie in Deutschland hat viele Gesichter. Zahlreiche Traditionen und Denkströmungen wirken in sie hinein, ohne jedoch eine klare Identität oder eindeutige Konturen zu ergeben. - Das Phänomen des menschlichen Bewußtseins wird in ein übergreifendes Gefüge physikalischer wie informationstheoretischer Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Der dänische Wissenschaftsjournalist Tor Noerretranders macht sich Gedanken über das Bewußtsein. Ich denke, also bin ich? "Nein", meint er, "nicht ich denke, sondern es denkt in mir, und dem, was wir 'ich' nennen, wird nur das Resultat bewußt, ein winziger Bruchteil dessen, was 'es' wahrgenommen und verarbeitet hat." Aber was ist dieses "es", das Selbst, wie es der Autor nennt? In seinem Buch beschreibt er eine Reihe naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, die zeigen, daß das Bewußtsein nicht das Zentrum unserer Entscheidungen und Handlungen ist, und daß wir zum größten Teil "nichtbewußt" denken und agieren. "Wir haben", so sagt er, "die besten 'Auftritte', wenn wir unserem Selbst freien Lauf lassen, wenn wir gerade nicht versuchen, es durch das Ich zu kontrollieren."

- "Stellen sie sich vor, über Nacht, als alles schlief, sei unbemerkt alles im Universum doppelt so groß geworden. Könnte man feststellen, daß dies geschehen ist?", "Wie überprüft man die Hypothese 'Alle Raben sind schwarz?`". Mit solchen Fragestellungen schafft es Autor Poundstone die grauen Zellen seiner Leser anzuregen und sie zum Nachdenken über scheinbare und reale Paradoxien bringen. Dabei werden dem Leser köstliche Anekdoten und Probleme aus allen Bereichen des Lebens und der Philosophie vorgeführt. Wem "Gödel, Escher, Bach" gefallen hat, wird an diesem Werk seine wahre Freude haben. Wem "GEB" zu formellastig war, findet hier ein Buch, daß fast ohne Formeln auskommt, und auch für wissenschaftliche Laien sehr gut und flüssig lesbar ist. Inbesondere der lockere und ungezwungene Humor machen dieses Buch sehr kurzweilig. Es kommt selten vor, daß man Sachbücher verschlingt, wie einen guten Krimi, aber dieses Buch ist nur sehr schwer aus der Hand zu legen, insbesondere für den günstigen Preis der Taschenbuchausgabe.

- Abstract
- Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert wird die Diskussion in der Philosophie durch den Begriff der Repräsentation bestimmt. Man vergleicht das Bewußtsein mit einem Spiegel, der die Realität reflektiert. Das Erkennen bemüht sich um die Genauigkeit dieser Reflexion, und die Arbeit des Erkennens besteht im Prüfen, Instandsetzen und Polieren des Spiegels der Natur. In einer eindringlichen und weit ausgreifenden Kritik dieser Metaphorik gibt Richard Rorty eine Übersicht ihres Einflusses auf die Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts: eine kritische Selbstreflexion der analytischen Philosophie, die zur Dekonstruktion der bezeichneten Metaphorik führt. In den drei Teilen dieses Buches diskutiert Rorty jeweils die Begriffe des Mentalen, der Erkenntnis und der Philosophie in einer von Dewey, Heidegger und Wittgenstein ausgehenden historischen Perspektive.

- Abstract
- Das Problem der Wahrnehmung und Darstellung von Wahrheit durch die Medien führt zu vier zentralen Fragen: Wie viel Wahrheit gibt es in der Welt, über die Journalisten berichten müssen? Wie ermittelt oder recherchiert man diese Wahrheit? Wie trennt man die Spreu vom Weizen? Und wie geht man als Journalist mit dem um, was man als Wahrheit erkannt hat oder erkannt zu haben glaubt? Hier gibt es ganz offensichtlich eine Parallele zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern. Journalisten und Wissenschaftler brauchen erstens Hypothesen, zweitens geeignete Hypothesentests, drittens ein gutes Abgrenzungs-Kriterium und viertens Verfahren, um die erkannten Sachverhalte auf angemessene Weise für eine Kommunikation mit anderen zu repräsentieren, das heißt sie darzustellen. Es gibt zwei große Unterschiede zwischen Journalisten und Wissenschaftlern: Journalisten sind in der Regel auf raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen aus, Wissenschaftler in der Regel auf raumzeitlich unbegrenzte Gesetze. Aber diese Unterschiede sind fließend, weil Wissenschaftler raum-zeitlich begrenzte Aussagen brauchen, um ihre All-Aussagen zu überprüfen, und Journalisten sich immer häufiger auf das Feld der allgemeinen Gesetzes-Aussagen wagen oder doch zumindest Kausalinterpretationen für soziale Phänomene anbieten. Der zweite Unterschied besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft weitgehend professionalisiert ist (zumindest gilt dies uneingeschränkt für die Naturwissenschaften und die Medizin), was ihr relativ klare Abgrenzungs- und Güte-Kriterien beschert hat. Diese fehlen weitgehend im Journalismus.

- Abstract
- Vorgestellt wird die Konstruktion eines thematisch geordneten Thesaurus auf Basis der Sachschlagwörter der Gemeinsamen Normdatei (GND) unter Nutzung der darin enthaltenen DDC-Notationen. Oberste Ordnungsebene dieses Thesaurus werden die DDC-Sachgruppen der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek. Die Konstruktion des Thesaurus erfolgt regelbasiert unter der Nutzung von Linked Data Prinzipien in einem SPARQL Prozessor. Der Thesaurus dient der automatisierten Gewinnung von Metadaten aus wissenschaftlichen Publikationen mittels eines computerlinguistischen Extraktors. Hierzu werden digitale Volltexte verarbeitet. Dieser ermittelt die gefundenen Schlagwörter über Vergleich der Zeichenfolgen Benennungen im Thesaurus, ordnet die Treffer nach Relevanz im Text und gibt die zugeordne-ten Sachgruppen rangordnend zurück. Die grundlegende Annahme dabei ist, dass die gesuchte Sachgruppe unter den oberen Rängen zurückgegeben wird. In einem dreistufigen Verfahren wird die Leistungsfähigkeit des Verfahrens validiert. Hierzu wird zunächst anhand von Metadaten und Erkenntnissen einer Kurzautopsie ein Goldstandard aus Dokumenten erstellt, die im Online-Katalog der DNB abrufbar sind. Die Dokumente vertei-len sich über 14 der Sachgruppen mit einer Losgröße von jeweils 50 Dokumenten. Sämtliche Dokumente werden mit dem Extraktor erschlossen und die Ergebnisse der Kategorisierung do-kumentiert. Schließlich wird die sich daraus ergebende Retrievalleistung sowohl für eine harte (binäre) Kategorisierung als auch eine rangordnende Rückgabe der Sachgruppen beurteilt.
