    Abstract
    Was geht vor, wenn in unserem Gehirn etwas vorgeht? Wie werden die verschiedenen neuronalen Systeme für die Verarbeitung eines Reizes miteinander verknüpft? Die Erforschung des Bewusstseins zählt zum spannendsten, was die Wissenschaft derzeit zu bieten hat. Obwohl wir einerseits genau zu wissen glauben, was Bewusstsein ist, tun wir uns schon als Laien außerordentlich schwer, dies zu erklären. Die Antworten der Autoren auf diese Fragen sind sehr umfassend und geben die neuesten Erkenntnisse wieder. Eines ist den Autoren allerdings auch klar: Die Einzigartigkeit des menschlichen Geistes werden wir mit wissenschaftlichen Mitteln allein nie völlig verstehen können

    »Israel Rosenfield ist ein eindrucksvoller und origineller Denker. Nach seiner Meinung hat die klassische mechanistische Neurologie unbeschadet all ihrer großen Errungenschaften abgewirtschaftet. Neurologische Krankheit oder Gesundheit sei ohne Bezug zum ständig wechselnden Körperbild, zum Bewußtsein, zum Sein des Organismus nicht zu verstehen. In diesem bedeutenden Buch zeigt der Autor anhand einerVielzahl klassischer Krankheitsfälle, wie grundlegend anders sie erklärt werden können, bezieht man alle Begleitumstände auf das Zentrum des Individuums, auf sein Selbstsein. Bei der Lektüre hat der Leser das Gefühl, er sähe die Patienten tatsächlich vor sich und Verstünde sie zum erstenmal. Das Buch dürfte jeden ansprechen, der sich fragt, was es heißt, ein bewußter Mensch zu sein, und der wissen möchte, wie Identität in sich organisiert ist und wie sie selbst Gesundheit und Krankheit organisiert.

    Abstract
    Dass strukturelle Veränderungen im Gehirn unser Verhalten beeinflussen, wissen wir seit langem. Aber: Wie verändern umgekehrt Schmerzerfahrungen, Kindheitstraumen, Ängste oder Depressionen unsere Hirnstruktur? Auf welche Weise bewirken Verhaltens-, Schmerz- und Psychotherapien eine neuronale Umstrukturierung? Diesen und ähnlichen Fragen widmet sich Johann Caspar Rüegg in seinem Buch "Psychosomatik, Psychotherapie und Gehirn". Es gibt derzeit wohl kein Gebiet der Medizin, das eine so rasante Entwicklung und eine so fruchtbare wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung erfährt wie das der "Neurosciences". Mithilfe so genannter bildgebender Verfahren ist es den Forschern gelungen, das Gehirn in vivo zu untersuchen, und sie sind dabei zu Ergebnissen gelangt, die Sigmund Freud auch aus biologischer Perspektive spät, aber eindrucksvoll Recht zu geben scheinen.

    Abstract
    Wenn von einer "umfassenden Aktualisierung" des 1999 im Original erschienenen populärwissenschaftlichen Taschenbuchs über die Funktionen und Arbeitsweisen des menschlichen Gehirns (BA 10/99), abgesehen einmal vom Kapitel über die Gefühle, kaum die Rede sein kann, so hat der Band der ehemaligen Wissenschaftsredakteurin der "SZ" nach wie vor Bestand als einer der wenigen "Gehirn-Titel", welcher die komplex-komplizierten neurobiologischen und -psychologischen Erkenntnisse der Hirnforschung inklusive der Möglichkeiten der neuen bildgebenden Verfahren bei der Erforschung von Entgleisungen des Gehirns (bei Depressionen, Schizophrenie, Parkinson) sowie der Entwicklungen auf den Feldern der KI und der Neuronalen Netze ohne Simplifizierungen in die Sprache von Otto Normalverbraucher verdolmetscht. Mit Glossar und Register. - Gern weiterhin empfohlen; der Vorläufer muss allerdings nicht unbedingt aus dem Bestand genommen werden.

    Abstract
    Der amerikanische Medizin-Nobelpreisträger ist im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Hirnforschern davon überzeugt, daß die Biologie den Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Gehirns und damit des menschlichen Geistes liefert. Seine These vertritt er in der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung. Sie "ist von einer erstaunlichen Vielfalt, die von der Philosophie zur Biologie, zur Psychologie und zur Computersimulation des Nervensystems reicht und daraus ein Ganzes zu machen versucht".     Abstract

    Abstract
    Fast nichts ist uns Menschen so wichtig wie unser subjektives, bewusstes Innenleben - und doch wissen wir relativ wenig über seine Genese. Benjamin Libet gehört zu den Pionieren auf dem Gebiet der Bewusstseinsforschung und hat zahlreiche Experimente durchgeführt, die gezeigt haben, wie das Gehirn Bewusstsein produziert. In seinem 2004 erschienenen und jetzt auf Deutsch vorliegenden Buch Mind Time präsentiert er erstmals eine eigene Deutung seiner berühmten »Libet-Experimente«, die die aktuelle Debatte über die Bedeutung der Hirnforschung für unser Menschenbild überhaupt erst angestoßen haben. Im Zentrum der Experimente steht der Nachweis, dass jedem bewussten Prozess ein unbewusster, jedoch messbarer Prozess zeitlich vorausgeht. Diese zeitliche Differenz - die »Mind Time« - lässt den Schluss zu, dass unbewusste Prozesse in unserem Gehirn unser Bewusstsein steuern, und nicht umgekehrt das Bewusstsein »Herr im Haus« ist. Die vermeintlich freien Willensakte etwa sind längst initiiert, bevor uns ein Handlungswunsch überhaupt gegenwärtig ist. Libet behandelt die weitreichenden Folgen seiner Entdeckung nicht nur für die Willensfreiheit, sondern auch für die Identität der Person und die Beziehung zwischen Geist und Gehirn.     Abstract
    Fühlen und Denken - oder Emotion und Kognition, Affekte und Logik im weiteren Sinn - werden in der gängigen wissenschaftlichen Forschung immer noch vorwiegend getrennt untersucht. Hauptthema des vorliegenden Buches sind dagegen ihre allgegenwärtigen Wechselwirkungen. Anhand einer systemtheoretisch fundierten Zusammenschau verschiedener bisher wenig verbundener, theoretischer Konzepte dessen, was wir die menschliche Psyche nennen, beschreibt der Autor die Grundlagen einer in allem Denken wirksamen "Affektlogik", in welcher affektive und kognitive Komponenten sinnvoll zusammenspielen.

    Abstract
    Das Historische Wörterbuch der Philosophie (HWPh), im Zeitraum von 1971 bis 2007 unter Mitwirkung von mehr als 1500 Fachgelehrten entstanden, ist eines der umfassendsten, bedeutendsten und auch erfolgreichsten Publikationsprojekte der jüngeren deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Lexika oder Enzyklopädien basiert das HWPh nicht auf einer Geschichte philosophischer Ideen oder Probleme, sondern auf der Geschichte der philosophischen Begriffe. In 12 Textbänden sowie einem abschliessenden Registerband dokumentiert das Lexikon in 17144 Spalten und rund 6000 Artikeln anhand zahlreicher präziser Belege und Stellenangaben Herkunft und Genese von insgesamt 3670 philosophischen Begriffen und beschreibt den Wandel ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion von ihrem ersten Auftreten bis heute. Das Konzept der begriffsgeschichtlichen Methode macht sowohl synchronisch Stellung und Bedeutung einzelner Begriffe in bestimmten Epochen oder bei bestimmten Philosophinnen und Philosophen als auch diachronisch deren Bedeutungsveränderungen innerhalb der abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte nachvollziehbar. Um die spezifisch philosophische Begriffsarbeit im Kontext des gesamten Wissenschaftssystems zu veranschaulichen, werden zudem auch Begriffe aus angrenzenden Fachgebieten - Theologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik, Soziologie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Politik, Jurisprudenz, Medizin sowie aus den Naturwissenschaften - behandelt.

    »Ich denke, also bin ich« - dieser Satz von Descartes ist wohl der berühmteste in der Geschichte der Philosophie. Ihm liegt die Vorstellung einer abgrundtiefen Trennung von Körper und Geist zugrunde, ein Dualismus, der im Denken der Menschen bis heute eine große Rolle spielt, auch wenn längst bekannt ist, daß die Tätigkeit des Geistes in direkter Beziehung zu den Aktivitäten des Gehirns steht. Die neuesten Ergebnisse der Forschung führen allerdings noch weit darüber hinaus. Sie bestätigen, was uns seit jeher der Alltag lehrt: Nicht Geist, Vernunft, Ratio allein machen den ganzen Menschen aus, sondern Geist und Gefühl. Und Geist und Gefühl sind mit den Funktionen des gesamten Organismus, nicht nur des Gehirns, aufs engste verknüpft. Ein Mensch, dessen emotionales und soziales Verhalten durch Hirnverletzungen gestört ist, vermag auch sogenannte rationale Entscheidungen nicht mehr zu treffen.
    Angestoßen durch Forschungen an neurologischen Patienten, tritt der Neurobiologe Damasio an, das seit Decartes tradierte naturwissenschaftliche Axiom der Trennung von Körper und Geist, von Vernunft und Gefühl, wissenschaftlich zu widerlegen: Ein Mensch, dessen emotionales Verhalten durch Hirnverletzungen gestört ist, vermag auch sog. rationale Entscheidungen nicht mehr angemessen zu treffen. Diese Beobachtung an Betroffenen fundiert der Autor ausführlich und verdichtet sie in der generellen Erkenntnis, daß Vernunft und Gefühl nicht getrennt voneinander agieren, sondern daß sie untereinander vernetzt sind, ja, daß Gefühle und Empfindungen sogar unentbehrlich seien für rationales Verhalten. Eine Bestätigung dieser Erkenntnisse widerfährt Damasio durch die aktuelle Diskussion um die sogenannte emotionale Intelligenz.

    Abstract
    In der Psychologie bündeln das Sondersammelgebiet Psychologie der Saarländischen Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek (SULB) und das Zentrum für Psychologische Information und Dokumentation (ZPID) in einem von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Projekt ihre Aktivitäten im Bereich der digitalen Psychologieinformation. Die zentralen Ziele des DFG-Projekts "Digitale Psychologie-Information" sind: - die Entwicklung und Propagierung eines Metadatenstandards für das Fach Psychologie, - die Anpassung des Spiders, Indexers und der Retrievalkomponenten der psychologiespezifischen Suchmaschine PsychSpider an diesen Metadatenstandard, - die Einrichtung eines Volltextservers für elektronische Dokumente aus der Psychologie, PsyDok, - die Integration der Linksammlung PsychLinker (ZPID) und des Fachinformationsführers Psychologie FIPS (SULB), - die Beteiligung der Fachcommunity an der Erschließung hochwertiger Internetressourcen.
