    Abstract
    Was ist die Natur mathematischer Objekte? Existieren sie unabhängig vom Gehirn des Menschen, oder sind sie das Produkt der Gehirnaktivität? Kann schließlich echte künstliche Intelligenz aus unbelebter Materie entstehen? Diese und weitere Fragen bis hin zum Bereich der Ethik werden in Dialogform von zwei hervorragenden Fachleuten der Mathematik und der Neurowissenschaften in diesem Buch diskutiert. Die Dialogform der Darstellung soll den Leser zum eigenen Nachdenken über den bis auf Plato zurückgehenden Problemkreis anregen.     »Gödel, Escher, Bach« war der Titel eines Kultbuchs der achtziger Jahre. Wer war eigentlich Kurt Gödel, der 1906 in Brünn geboren wurde? Ein Jahrhundertgenie als Mathematiker, der größte Logiker seit Aristoteles, ein enger Freund und wichtiger Gesprächspartner von Albert Einstein in Princeton. Im Jahr 1931 formulierte Gödel den Unvollständigkeitssatz, der die Mathematiker schockierte. Er besagt im Kern, daß es keine vollständigen Theorien geben kann. Gödels Entdeckung steht auf einer Stufe mit Einsteins Relativitätstheorien und Heisenbergs Unbestimmtheitsrelation. Rebecca Goldstein, Philosophin und Autorin mehrerer Romane aus dem Wissenschaftsmilieu, zeigt, warum Kurt Gödel, der 1978 in Princeton starb, zu den größten Genies der Menschheit gerechnet wird.     Time Magazine reihte ihn unter die hundert wichtigsten Personen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Ausgangspunkt des Buches waren die Vorbereitungen zu einer Ausstellung über Kurt Gödel aus Anlass seines hundertsten Geburtstags. Eine Ausstellung hat etwas von einem Spaziergang an sich, und gerade das wollen wir bieten: einen Spaziergang mit Gödel. Albert Einstein genoss solche Spaziergänge sehr. Man kann also Gödel genießen.

    Abstract
    Der berühmte Physiker Richard P. Feynman sagte einmal: "In einem Glas Wein steckt das ganze Universum". Die ganze Mathematik steckt dagegen, so könnte man nach der Lektüre von Pi, die Story von Jean-Paul Delahaye meinen, in der Zahl Pi. Tatsache: Was den Physikern ihr Doppelspaltexperiment, ist dem Mathematiker die Kreiszahl -- eigentlich sollte sie nur das Verhältnis zwischen Umfang und Durchmesser eines Kreises definieren, aber im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entpuppte sie sich als Störenfried, der Rechengelehrten das Leben gehörig zur Hölle machte. Wie kann eine einfache Zahl Generationen von Mathematikern zur Verzweiflung treiben? Wieso verbrachten Gelehrte Jahrzehnte damit, wenige Nachkommastellen dieser Zahl auszurechnen -- wie zum Beispiel der Mathematiker Rutherford, der sich dummerweise ab der 152. Stelle verrechnete und daher genausogut fünf Jahre seines Lebens auf den Bahamas hätte Urlaub machen können? Wieso verbringen erwachsene Menschen ihre Zeit damit, in engen, mit Computern vollgestopften Zimmern zu hausen, die nicht beheizt, aber trotzdem warm sind von der Abwärme von Computerprozessoren, die auf der Suche nach Regelmäßigkeiten in der Zahl Pi sind? Genau das ist Delahayes Thema, und genau das hebt sein Werk aus der Masse vieler populärwissenschaftlicher Bücher zu ähnlichen Themen heraus: Der Autor macht nicht nur Forschung begreifbar, sondern steckt regelrecht an mit seiner Begeisterung für Pi. Wußten Sie, daß die Zahl Pi in den bisher gefundenen Nachkommastellen dieser Zahl -- statistisch verschlüsselt -- ihrerseits verborgen ist? Daß Pi in der Bibel vorkommt (allerdings mit einem lausigen Näherungswert)? Daß es eine Formel gibt, die Nachkommastellen liefert, die bis zur 42 Milliardsten Nachkommastelle mit denen von Pi identisch sind, danach aber nicht mehr -- und niemand weiß warum? Dies und noch viel, viel mehr Staunenswertes breitet Delahaye vor seinen Lesern aus, er stellt Mathematiker vor, die sich über Pi und ähnliche Zahlenmonster den Kopf zerbrochen haben: Leibnitz, Euler, Ramanujan -- dieses früh verstorbene Genie, das "mal eben" Formeln auf Notizblätter werfen konnte, die Mathematikern bis heute die Tränen in die Augen schießen lassen. Delahaye zeigt die brillianten Ideen, mit denen er und seine Kollegen heute ihren Problemen zu Leibe rücken, erklärt elegante Beweise, durchdachte Computeralgorithmen und faszinierende Skurrilitäten, wie zum Beispiel eine Zahl, die man zwar definieren, aber niemals berechnen kann. Wer sich auf dieses Buch einläßt, braucht als Nichtmathematiker schon etwas Mut -- denn Delahaye fordert seinen Lesern einiges ab: Unendliche Reihen, Zahlentheorie, wirklich knackige Algebra. Und manchmal geht der Computerexperte mit ihm durch -- möglich, daß nicht alle seine Kollegen alles unterschreiben würden, was er z.B. in Sachen rechnergestützte Mathematik von sich gibt. Aber viele der Schätze in diesem Buch kann man auch heben, ohne sich ein mathematisches Handbuch an die Seite legen zu müssen: Hier ist eben der gesunde Menschenverstand endlich wieder gefragt. "Pi ist ein Spielverderber", "Pi ist überall", "Pi ist eine Falle". Dieses Buch auch -- und eine Herausforderung.

    Abstract
    Das neue Lexikon der Mathematik bietet in insgesamt ca. 17.000 Stichworteinträgen einen umfassenden Überblick über die moderne Mathematik, ihre Fachterminologie und ihre Anwendungen. Die behandelten Fachgebiete reichen von so klassischen Fachgebieten wie Geometrie, Zahlentheorie oder auch Geschichte der Mathematik über Numerische Mathematik, Graphentheorie, Versicherungsmathematik und Optimierung bis hin zu modernsten Anwendungen wie etwa Wavelets, kryptographischen und Codierungsverfahren oder Neuronale Netze. Besondere Berücksichtigung fanden bei der Konzeption des Lexikons die Biographien bedeutender Mathematikerinnen und Mathematiker, von der Antike (Diophant, Euklid) bis hin zur Gegenwart (Collatz, Faltings, Hirzebruch). Dadurch wurde dem Umstand Rechnung getragen, dass gerade in der Mathematik eine Fülle von Verfahren, Methoden oder auch Lehrsätzen existiert, die nach Persönlichkeiten benannt sind, von denen der Leser gerne etwas mehr erfahren möchte, so z.B. 'abelsche Gruppe', 'Satz des Pythagoras', 'euklidischer Algorithmus' oder 'Gaußsche Normalverteilung'

    Abstract
    Das Historische Wörterbuch der Philosophie (HWPh), im Zeitraum von 1971 bis 2007 unter Mitwirkung von mehr als 1500 Fachgelehrten entstanden, ist eines der umfassendsten, bedeutendsten und auch erfolgreichsten Publikationsprojekte der jüngeren deutschsprachigen Geisteswissenschaften. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Lexika oder Enzyklopädien basiert das HWPh nicht auf einer Geschichte philosophischer Ideen oder Probleme, sondern auf der Geschichte der philosophischen Begriffe. In 12 Textbänden sowie einem abschliessenden Registerband dokumentiert das Lexikon in 17144 Spalten und rund 6000 Artikeln anhand zahlreicher präziser Belege und Stellenangaben Herkunft und Genese von insgesamt 3670 philosophischen Begriffen und beschreibt den Wandel ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion von ihrem ersten Auftreten bis heute. Das Konzept der begriffsgeschichtlichen Methode macht sowohl synchronisch Stellung und Bedeutung einzelner Begriffe in bestimmten Epochen oder bei bestimmten Philosophinnen und Philosophen als auch diachronisch deren Bedeutungsveränderungen innerhalb der abendländischen Philosophiegeschichte nachvollziehbar.     Abstract
    Dieser Band mit 42 aktuellen Arbeiten von 45 Wissenschafts- und Technikwissenschaftlern erscheint aus Anlass des 65. Geburtstages des Münchner Wissenschaftshistorikers Ivo Schneider. In den einzelnen Beiträgen der Autoren, von denen die meisten der Wissenschafts- und Technikgeschichte, einige aber auch der Wissenschaftsphilosophie bzw. anderen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen entstammen, werden Arbeiten zur gesamten Wissenschafts- und Technikgeschichte von der Antike bis zum 20. Jahrhundert präsentiert. Aus den verschiedenen Kontexten heraus verweisen die Beiträge auf die Bedeutung von Form(en) in Mathematik und Philosophie, sie zeigen, dass keine moderne Naturwissenschaft ohne Zahl und Ordnung auskommt, wie auch die (moderne) Mathematik oft mehr mit Ordnung denn mit Zahl zu tun hat. Dem Leser wird in diesem Band das große Spektrum reflektionswissenschaftlicher Forschung ausgebreitet, das in der gegenwärtigen Wissenschaftslandschaft leider immer weniger berücksichtigt wird.

Er ist es, der nicht mehr danach suchte, woraus ein Ding zu dem geworden ist, was es ist, oder wie es entstanden ist, sondern danach, «was [ein Ding] ist», und somit ist Sokrates der erste gewesen, der die Herausarbeitung des Allgemeinen (?a?????) forderte und mit seinen Fragen seine Gesprächspartner zu dieser Herausarbeitung trieb bzw. lockte; die Definition (???sµ??) war das Ziel des sokratischen Gesprächs, und die sokratische Aporie war das Vehikel.

    Abstract
    Die moderne Kultur hat sich mit den Informations- und Computertechnologien erneut Daidalos-Flügel angelegt. Das Buch beschreibt zunächst Entwicklung und Grundlagen dieser Technologien (z.B. programmgesteuerte Computer, KI, wissensbasierte Systeme, Neuronale Netze), untersucht erkenntnistheoretische Fragen computergestützter Mathematik, Natur- und Kulturwissenschaften und entwirft eine Philosophie des Geistes, die den neuen Technologien Rechnung trägt.     Abstract
    Die Einleitung zu Heinrich Hertz' letztem Werk "Die Prinzipien der Mechanik in neuem Zusammenhange dargestellt" ist ein Meilenstein auf dem langen Weg von Galileis Auffassung, das "Buch der Natur" sei in "geometrischen Zeichen geschrieben", zum modernen Konzept des mathematischen Modells. Hertz scheint der Erste gewesen zu sein, der die Bedeutung der naturwissenschaftlichen Entwicklung des 19. Jahrhunderts für die Rolle der Mathematik in der Naturerkenntnis ins Bewusstsein gehoben und die Konsequenzen deutlich ausgesprochen hat: Es gibt für einen Gegenstandsbereich etwa der Physik verschiedene richtige mathematische Beschreibungen und nicht nur die eine. Deswegen müssen für die Auswahl der "inneren Scheinbilder und Symbole der äußeren Gegenstände" (im heutigen Sprachgebrauch: der mathematischen Modelle) weitere Kriterien hinzu kommen. Hertz nennt als die drei wichtigsten: Richtigkeit, Zulässigkeit, Zweckmäßigkeit. Das damit verbundene Auseinanderfallen von Mathematik und Substanzwissenschaften hat Folgen auch für die Grenzen der Naturerkenntnis, die mehr als hundert Jahre später immer noch oft übersehen werden.
