  Abstract: The task facing the designers of information retrieval (IR) systems can be stated very simply: to produce the right kind of system with the right components at the right price. In practice, however, this task is greatly hindered by a lack of understanding and communication between the different groups of specialists working on different parts of the system - a problem exacerbated by the fact that each group uses a different jargon, so preventing the exchange of ideas and expertise. There is thus a need for a comprehensive, unified overview of practical computer-based retrieval, and this book provides one. It describes the various parts and their alternative forms, the relationships between them and how these affect the working of the system as a whole. Topics covered include: user, software, knowledge representation, expert systems, database management systems, hardware, user interfaces.
