Abstract
Reports results of a study, by the School of Computing and Information Systems, Sunderland University, with paint technology scientists at Courtaulds Coatings, of the flow of proprietary information within the organization. This had led to a new model for information retrieval: the word-of-mouth system or 'grapevine'. This informal network is used to circulate information about the interests, expertise and work of individuals within the organization. Seeing the information in such personal terms helps to filter and direct it. This makes the word-of-mouth system a very powerful computerized system. A detailed prototype of the Word-of-Mouth Emulator has been built to capture information by allowing explicit declaration af areas of interst/expertise; and by logging and analysing scientists's behaviour in using the information retrieval system itself. In producing this prototype Word-of-Mouth Emulator some questions have been raised which bear directly on the relationship between expertise and information retrieval
