Abstract

Eponymy is the practice of affixing the name of the scientist to all or part of what he has found. Defines direct, indirect and implicit citation, investiagtes the development of eponymy for one scientific method, Southern blotting, and suggests an empirical definition of an eponymous achievement. The working hypothesis for this study is: as a scientific discovery achieves eponymy, it tends to be cited via secondary sources more than to the primary source, and then to be cited less and less to any sour. The eponym serves as an implied citation
