Abstract

The normative principles proposed for use while desiging a classification scheme by Ranganathan have also been found to be useful in designing biliographic databases. Evaluates the telescopic and partitioned approaches to database field definition in terms of Ranganathan's normative principles of classification. The telecopic approach is found to agree well with the idea plane (as described by Neelameghan, Libri 42(1992) no.2, S.202-226). Recommends the use of menmonic principles at the verbal and the notational planes and of subfield standards like the Common Communication Format (CCF) for improved compatibility
