Abstract

Presents a brief introduction to expert systems, reviews the history, and describes some major developments of expert systems in library applications, with an emphasis on cataloguing, acquisition, and collection development. A literature review reveals that the current state of expert system applications in these 3 areas of technical services is still in an early stage with only a handful of systems being used on a day-to-day practical operation. Discusses the barriers that inhibit developments and assesses the future of expert systems to libraries. The expectation is that expert system technology will be of great use in the future integrated library system
