Abstract

Discusses the project involved in the British Library's Initiatives for Access Programme. These include a prototype electronic 'photo viewing' system for picture research; networked OPAC on JANET; the Patent Jukebox of a million current patents from the UK, US and European Patant Offices; Portico, an online information server; evaluation of neural networks for optical character recognition; investigation of SuperJANET for transmission of large image files; digital conversion of sound recordings; scanning of microfilm such as the Burnley collection of the 17th and 18th century newspapers onto optical disc; and the digitisation of the Magna Carta, Lindisfarne Gospels, Leonardo Sketchbooks, Sforza Hours and the Diamond Sutra for archival storage, multimedia development and on-screen viewing in the library's exhibition galleries
