Abstract

Argues that the dominance of information technology in librarianship and the information age assumptions which form the basis of that dominance is likely to remain at the top of the library and information science profession's agenda for the foreseeable future. While a quick review of the agenda of librarianship conforms this, there are deeper and more fundamental issues embedded in the adoption of information technologies in libraries. Reviews 3 of these fundamantal issues; the real purpose of the information superhighway; the costs of and privacy in an electronic environemt; and multimedia resources and their relationship to literacy. By focusing on areas which the profession has chosen to ignore in its enthusiasm for technology, some problems which cut to the heart of the professed values of librarianship are revealed
