Abstract
Auf dem Weg in die globale Informationsgesellschaft werden öffentliche Bibliotheken ihre Dienstleistungen entsprechend modifizieren müssen. In dieser Arbeit wird deshalb zunächst die Rolle öffentlicher Bibliotheken in der Informationsgesellschaft diskutiert, die sich daraus ergebenden neuen Aufgabenbereiche der Bibliotheken, Applikationsfelder des Internet in der bibliothekarischen Praxis, sowie Probleme des Einsatzes von Internet in öffentlichen Bibliotheken besprochen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird die Studie des Project GAIN vorgestellt, um Erfahrungswerte öffentlicher Bibliotheken zur Installation eines Internet-Anschlusses und der Integration des Internet in deren Service vorzulegen. Die Helsinki City Library und die Internet Public Library liefern außerdem Beispiele einer kreativen Umsetzung tradtioneller Dienstleistungen öffentlicher Bibliotheken in Internet-Serviceleistungen. Das abschließende Kapitel thematisiert die Wichtigkeit einer Einbindung öffentlicher Bibliotheken in kommunale Netzwerke
