Abstract

Outlines the evolution of the Z39.50 international standard, a protocol governing the formats and procedures used by multiple computers to interact with each other. Library systems which follow the Z39.50 standard allow access to information regardless of the operating environment, hardware, or vendor system on which the information is mounted. Ovid Technologies Inc. have implemented the Z39.50 client/server standard in all their products. Describes the advanced capabilities of the Ovid client/server and its advantages over traditional VT-100 implementations
