Abstract

Explores the challenges facing archivists in the preservation of and access to electronic documents in electronic archives and suggests how archival theory and practice contributes solutions to preservation and access in a networked environment. Concludes that electronic archives will require special management techniques that are not always recognized in the current literature about network communications and digital libraries due to the ways in which archive records differ from other types of information. Discusses the nature of documentary evidence and the significance of archival principles, strategies for electronic archives in the network environment and the implications for humanities scholars
