Abstract

Describes a project undertaken in 1994 by the illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University in cooperation with the Illinois State Library, to prepare librarians for a new role in local economic development. The programme involved a series of workshops at which librarians learned practical ways of becoming more actively involved in economic development efforts: in particular how to use information resources more effectively to help the start up and expansion of local businesses. Examines some of the initiatives started by public librarians, the successes of these efforts, and the attitude of librarians toward continuing such activities in the future, based on a mail survey. A checklistof 10 points on how librarians can become more involved in community development is appended
