Abstract

Describes the development of a standalone expert system, MAKLUM, designed to provide answers to general reference enquiries relating to library facilities, services, regulations, loans, membership, location of items, and public amenities. MAKLUM was developed for the Malaya University main library using the expert system shell, CRYSTAL 4.50 running on DOS. 15 undergraduate students tested the system and 73% rated it as very good to excellent, and 84% liked most the system's ease of use and its user interface. The most sought after information about library services are facilities, borrowings and reference priviledges
