Abstract

The OCLC library catalog, called the OCLC Online Union Catalog (OLUC) on EPIC, and WorldCat on FirstSearch, contains over 30 million records representing the holdings of over 20.000 libraries. Identifies the most effective methods of teaching users how to search the WorldCat database on FirstSearch. Through the use of training seminars and examples drawn from real life reference questions, identifies specific training goals to insure that users become competent searchers. Among the topics discussed are: how to identify labels using the h label command; the use of the limit command; the Wordlist and bound phrase searching capabilities; precision searching using the w and n operators; how to identify English language translations of foreign literary works; and searching for materials other than books (theses, dissertations, and illustrated materials). Concludes that the WorldCat database provides an impressive bibliographic resource that should ne accessible to every library
