Abstract

Audiovisual sources and their transmission as a cultural heritage becomes more and more important at a time when compression and acceleration of the communicative process is taking place through digital techniques, and mankind is gathering in a 'global village' of telecommunications. Describes the situation of audiovisual transmission in Germany, public access to audiovisual documents, and their integration into the reappraisal and research of contemporary history. Considers the effects of reunification and the dual system of private and public broadcasting stations. Proposes the idea of a new institution, 'Die Deutsche Mediathek', which could present a cultural mirror image of Germany, offering a selection of audiovisual transmission as a mixture of a publicly accessible museum, archives, and audiovisual library
