Abstract

The publication of Ranganathan's Colon Classification (CC) in 1933 is a landmark in the evolution of classification theory. According to Ranganathan, all human knowledge is composed of a relatively few basic subjects (BS) which may be arranged, combined and interrelated in an infinite variety of ways. 7 editions of CC have so far appeared. Critically examines the development and treatment of basic subjects in the different editions. Whilst growth of BS has been almost stagnant in editions 1 to 6, in edition 7, there has been a considerable increase in the number of BS. Provides guidelines for future research on revisiong and improving the basic subjects without making radical changes
