Abstract

The lack of control over the content of the Internet has given rise to two concerns of central interest to the public and to the library professional: that it will be used for inappropriate and even harmful purposes; and that efforts to control its misuse will lead to unwarranted restrictions. Reports the debate in the USA over censorship of the Internet, with particular reference to pornography. Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of filtering systems to protect children from harmful sites. Stresses the importance for libraries with Internet connections to draw up and enforce Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) that both librarians and users clearly understand. Librarians should not control what users can or cannot access on the Internet but should apply traditional tenets of intellectual freedom to the new media
