Abstract

A user who makes repeated use of a retrieval system may be assumed to have a context which is common to successive users, and that an information retrieval system which could make use of this context may be better able to match specific needs. Describes a machine learning approach to inferring the user's context, developed in conjunction with the Okapi information retrieval system. Presents the results of an evaluation experiment. There is scope for information retrieval systems to operate in this way
