Abstract

Although many peoply in the library community have been discussing and promoting the benefits of EDI for several years, it is still not really a reality in academic libraries in the USA. Looks at the reasons for this and attempts to persuade library administrators of the benefits of EDI which include: saving money and time on activities; making it possible to provide more value-added services; increasing the library's visibility and recognition within the institution as a whole; and enabling new ways to reassign staff and provide services in new areas within existing budgets. Suggests how a library should begin the process toward the implementation of EDI and considers the detrimental effects of not introducing EDI including a decline in library purchasing power and a decline in efficiency and cost-effectiveness
