Abstract

Public key techniques provide the basis for secure information interchange and the intended legal acknowledgement of digital documents. However, the so-called digital signatures differ considerably from conventional signatures on paper. With the help of asymmetric techniques and mathematical algorithms, secret keys are created in order to sign, and public keys to verify documents. The introduction of cryptographic methods in records creation and management will bring about new problems for public administrations and for archives, including the question of whether archives can ensure the credibility of arcival documents and verify electronic signatures in the future
