Abstract

Discusses the relationship between the reference staff memeber and the user in academic libraries by examining what are believed to be 2 interrelated principles: mediation and user self determination. Users determine success in the reference transaction while librarians mediate between users and collections. Quality mediation can only occur when user self determination is present and active during the reference process
