Abstract

The ESRC data archive at the University of Essex has provided access to social science research data for the academic community since the late 1960s. Since the mid-1980s bibliographic descriptions of all the Archive's 5000 plus datasets have been available to users of JANET and the Internet via the Archives BIRON (Bibliographic Information Retrieval Online) System. The Archive is now seeking to extend the bibliographic information on BIRON to the full texts of the documentation held. Discusses the nature of social science data and documentation, digitisation of existing paper documents, development of information retrieval tools and access to the resulting databases both by CD-ROM and via the Internet
