1st in a series of articles on integrating image handling into online searching skills. Explains why images have not previously been available on online databases. Outlines the types of images now available and the services which provide them. Introduces how to deal with digital images. Covers: compression, resolution, conversion, viewing, printing, transmitting, keeping track of images and copyright. In the short term copyright will be the major obstacle. Schemes to improve intellectual access will be developed and pattern recognition search engines will improve
